Purchased an XBox with my american express blue card back in december. Unfortunately, the XBox broke after 4 months. It would no longer play any DVD's or games, it would just sit there and nothing would appear on the screen. From my limited technical knowledge, I assumed the DVD drive broke. I called microsoft to find out about getting it fixed and they informed me that the XBox only comes with 3 months warranty and that since the XBox was out of warranty, I would have to pay $120.00 to fix it. Considering that a new XBox only costs $199.00, I was upset. When I questioned them about it, they said it was so expensive because the mainboard would most likely need to be replaced. I told them I still thought it was expensive and then the tech guy broke the news to me. It seems microsoft lowered the price of the XBox at retail, but forgot to lower the repair prices accordingly. So, I was pretty much paying for a repair based on a $299.00 retail cost, instead of the $199.00 retail cost. Of course I was very upset and the tech guy told me to call back tomorrow to speak with a supervisor to get the price lowered.
I never called back and the XBox sat in my room for a few weeks until my girlfriend reminded me that I had purchased the XBox with my American Express Blue Card which comes with Warranty extension! Wohoo, I immediately called American Express and explained the situation. They asked me the following:
-What did you buy?
-When did you buy it?
-What's wrong with it?
-How much did it cost?
I answered all the questions and then they told me someone would call me. About 8-10 days later, I got a check in the mail for the original price of $299.00 that I paid for the XBox. They didn't even ask me to return the broken XBox!
If you don't use an American Express card, you need to start!
By the way, just to compare services, I called my Visa Platinum Card to see if I would get similar service. My Visa platinum card comes with the same warranty extension benefit. I had a CD player I bought with the Visa Platinum that broke and was also out of warranty. I called Visa and they asked my the same questions as american express. Then they told me they would be sending out a claim form to me and I would need to provide photocopy's of everything I had and after they reviewed it, they would contact me.
I promptyl proceeded to cut my Visa platinum card in half.
