american computer on wireless network in china?

Hey all,

my girlfriend is doing a medical rotation in shanghai and called me last night on a phone that sounded like a Geiger counter, panicked because she can't get any internet access on her laptop. I cant trouble shoot the issues from here and was wondering if anybody knew what was up? i know that different countries use different freq bands for wireless but she still couldn't connect even by connecting via ethernet. She says her uncles internet works fine there so i think the connection works fine.

I have no experience with the Chinese Internet, nor with specifics of Chinese wireless networking.

Barring any Chinese-specific weirdness that others might report here, I'd start with low-level TCP/IP troubleshooting. You start by trying to communicate with her Uncle's PC, with simple pings, and then work your way outbound. You'll want to know the results of an "IPCONFIG /ALL" command on both her's and her uncle's PCs.

Once you establish basic IP connectivity with the outside, you start checking things like name resolution and any firewalls or proxy servers that are in place.
