American Citizen Beaten To Death In Mexican Jail By Guards

I can not express my outrage against Mexico any stronger than with a news story like this one.

Why does the state department sit on its hands and pretend Mexico is a safe place for US citizens to travel, when clearly, it's not? If the tourists there can't even trust the police not to kill them in jail while on a CAMERA, then WTF are they going there for, in the first place? Mexico would be at the bottom of my list of places to go for beach fun. The only reason teeny boppers who are not 21 go there for spring break is the 18 year old drinking age, not because it's a safe place to travel. I heard most resort beaches have armed military guards sitting around in jeeps with machine guns just to keep all the Mexican criminals away. But after a story like this one, I don't see what the difference is.

The US should have gone to Mexico and taken it over at least 100 years ago, and they would be a stable democracy already, and a worthy ally and economic partner. But now, they are just a criminal cess pool since we failed to do anything about it when it would have been much easier to do.

I know Texas just executed some mexican citizen recently, in spite of protests from the Mexican government and the UN, but that was within our legal system at least. This is kind of fucked up. Still, I thought it was common knowledge that mexican jails are a REALLY bad place end up if you're on vacation there.. I figured this kind of thing was common.

aside from all of that, I'm sure if you looked hard enough, you could find a story about US prison guards beating an American inmate to death. I'm not sure why the outrage at the entire country of Mexico over this specifically.

Not much of a story there, but this aside I Have no interest in going to Mexico. I do not believe the place is safe. I think if you live in a first world country you should probably tour first worlds. A romantic trip in a destitute sh*t hole country becomes soon painful if you have any run-in with the law or bureaucracy whatsoever. E.g. one minute enjoying the vistas of Kenya and the next you're hearing mortars go off in the distance because the rebels are on the attack again. No, thank you.

maybe you should ask the tourists that instead of blaming the whole country.

I was in another area of Mexico recently and didn't see anything like that. They do have a heavy police presence on the highways though.

Been to Mexico many times, never seen soliders with guns at the beach.

In Mexico City, there are armed guards to protect store fronts.

Hey look its someone that thinks they know what they are talking about...

Crime in Mexico continues at high levels, and it is often violent

DoS for a LONG time has said Mexico is NOT safe. Just because you are too dumb to do a search does not mean you can just make stuff up.

No, actually, you are wrong. It hasn't been "for a long time" the date was VERY recent on April 14, 2008. When they changed the status recently and slightly upgraded it, the Mexican government also threw a fit over it. Tourism, don't you know. There is no travel WARNING against going there, even though there should be. Most poor countries lately have at least a travel advisory of some sort on it, BTW. Thanks for playing and calling others dumb though, stupid. But my opinion does qualify as making stuff up. Just like yours does.

U.S. State Department only up-graded Travel alert to Mexico

Why not a Warning for Mexico travel or at least an up-grade to the existing alert?

The U.S. Government has not issued a new travel warning or even an up-grade on its existing alert. Even though many Mexican cities on the U.S. Border and elsewhere in Mexico is under siege. The question is why not. Mexico is now one of the most dangerous countries in the world. And it is our neighbors to the south with a population nearing 100 million people.

Meh, I'd still go. I've been to war zones which have still been somewhat safe, with violent crime and whatnot you just stay out of the bad areas and don't bring valuables with you. And bribe the police if they start to fuck with you. This guy didn't deserve to die but I'm curious as to what he did and how he acted with the police.

I'm thinking alcohol was involved in the original incident. That said, this poor bastard, no matter how personally stupid, did not deserve to die, beaten to death by guards, in a Mexican prison.

how dare you dig up such dirty story on those nice mexican ppl you bigot. How dare you talk about them. Even if they did those bad Americans had no business going into their country.

I'm inclined to agree.

Yikes, I was vacationing in Cabo San Lucas just a month ago. Walked home a couple of times at 3 AM by myself and didn't feel compelled to be afraid of anything. I was ready to bribe my way out of trouble if needed, though. 😛

Good fukin grief. I would have kicked that fools ass. How can people be so desensitized to this crap?

I must have overlooked that news/thread. I don't know what pisses me off more, that it happened, or that 10 people stood around like zombies doing nothing about it. My parents didn't raise me like that. I guess they need to clone my genes and make them available to zombie breeders everywhere. :gift:

Good news Skoorb, at 1million+ per year, you don't have to go to Mexico. Just walk the streets of California or any other heavily inundated population in our own country.

It wasn't in spite of protests, it was in spite of the treaty our nation signed not being followed, which the four non-radical Supreme Court Justices said was illegal.

That's because they like to pull your ass over and extort you for any cash or valuables you have (most, not all are like this).

This reminds me of some episodes from the show Locked Up Abroad on national geopgrahic channel.

No I agree with you he didn't deserve a death penalty for whatever he did but I don't agree with the attitude in this thread of 'Mexico is crime-ridden and dangerous an nobody should go there and how dare the government not tell us all not to go there.'

Even Mexican police laugh at their own dead comrade.

----------------------------------------------------------
Juan Jose Soriano, deputy commander of the Tecate Police Department, helped U.S. authorities find a drug-smuggling tunnel. The next morning, gunmen shot him 45 times in his bedroom.

"at Soriano's funeral, where many cops seemed to be celebrating his death, said one person who attended. Some laughed, while others chatted loudly in gestures of disrespect"

Read my link, it was NOT about the alerts but the warning that has been there about crime for a LONG time. I saw the same crime warning several years ago after I got married and looked at Mexico to travel to. I also have seen that same warning now that I work for state department in the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the DoS.

DoS has long said Mexico is high in crime and anybody that goes there should be aware of it.

"CRIME: Crime in Mexico continues at high levels, and it is often violent, especially in Mexico City, Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, Acapulco, and the state of Sinaloa. Other metropolitan areas have lower, but still serious, levels of crime. Low apprehension and conviction rates of criminals contribute to Mexico?s high crime rate. U.S. citizen victims of crime in Mexico are encouraged to report the incident to the nearest police headquarters and to the nearest U.S. consular office."

That is not a alert but the standard warning about crime in mexico.
