For all of you who constantly bash American cars and like Japanese cars, have you owned a new American car (2001 - 2004)? What do you base your judgmen upon?

I like them(American cars), i think the styling is awesome and just plain cool. All Japanese cars look alike..

Not really.. Never owned one.. Always drove a Japanese (Honda).. but getting sick of them..
 
Oh yea! The styling is just oh so impressive!!! I have said it in the past and I will say it again, who styled the GTO??? It looks like Sears styled it.

Had a Hyundai Excel beater car that lasted for ages, a Honda Accord(Made in Tennessee) and a Chevy Prism (Essentially a no-named Toyota Corolla)

Every other car I have had has been a POS
 
I'm not a big car basher, but I submit that few domestic manufacturers can build an econobox that's good for anything except making money for the mechanics.

Friend has a Pontiac Sunbird...I swear you would get a better car by replacing the blueprints with drawings by kids in Special Ed.

TERRIBLE mileage, slower than a lawn tractor, uncomfortable (less headroom than most Japanese cars...), breaks down, has a bunch of little "quirks" like electronics that come and go, it's just terrible.

When it comes to sports cars though, I'd buy a Corvette (or the new GT40...I wish!) in a heartbeat.
 
For one thing, American cars are great values if you buy them used.

I bought my 2000 Ford Taurus SE w/ 65K miles for only $4,700!

That's the problem though. Buy a new domestic car and unless you drop a huge amount down you're upside-down forever. Even if you do put a big amount down you'll never get your $$$ back out of it. And yes I know you never get your money back out of a car but some hold their values very well and domestics for the most part do not.
 
I used to work in the rental car industry for many years. American cars just plain suck in comparison to Japanese cars. We had Dodges/Chryslers, Cadillacs, Pontiacs, Chevys, Buicks, Fords and Toyotas in our rental fleets. The Fords were probably a little better than the rest but the Toyotas really stood out as excellent cars. The GM and Chrysler products were junk. It wasn't just a few models either, from trucks to cars and minivans...all of it was utter garbage. I won't own a GM or a Chrysler based on my years of experience in rental car. I don't care if a turd looks like a ruby. It's still a turd.

As for the "they've improved them this year, they should be better" argument? They've been saying that for years. They'll be saying that for many more years to come. I don't believe it personally.

Doesn't most domestic cars come with a huge rebate? I think it's a pricing structure they need to change but that's what i thought. I'd walked in to a Ford dealer and he quoted me a price of 31K.. then 1/2 later, after he adds this and that, the price is high $23K.. this was a year ago.. That's fvcking retarded.

Except the fact that they keep Americans employed?
 
Oh, and there's the whole resale value thing. Look at the post above. A 3 year old Taurus for $4700? That car probably msrp'd for over $20k new. So, it lost 75% of it's value in 3 years. Wow...just wow.

Also, I need to get in some foreign cars because I keep hearing about this argument about the interiors and from the pictures I don't see that great of a difference. The way you guys talk about interiors I expect to get wood just grabbing the door handle.

I think you are thinking of American cars compared to German cars. German cars have slipped in quality. American cars have gone up in some areas slightly. Japanese cars still remain on top though.

We had Camry's and Corollas that never saw the dealership in 40k miles. All the American cars were in and out of the shop all the time. If I had a dollar for every Dodge minivan that broke down on a customer I wouldn't have to work right now.

I practically got wood driving my friend's G35 coupe a couple weekends ago. Man, that's a hell of a nice car.

All they had to do was copy the japanese. Only took them a few decades to figure it out.

the big honda gauges has always been one of the top in the industry...imo, better then audi's
