Yesterday I went to Chevy's with a friend, and got the El Gordo (sp?) It's like a huge thing of everything on a skillet.
and then I got this weird desert called flan, which is basically a slab of saturated fat (egg yolks) with maybe 5-10 yolks in there, covered with some brown sugar syrup and whipped cream.

a common misconception is that people get fat by eating fatty foods. in general you gain far more body fat from carbohydrates than from the fat in foods.

common sense does apply to this rule of thumb. if you are eating tubs of lard bags of mcdonalds double cheese burgersy ou arent going to stay thin or . I blame the old food pyramid that says you should glut on carbs.

j/k on the food pyramid.

still trying to regain that 30 waist i had only 2 short years ago. ah well i gotta go find some more chips

All the industrial fat food joints have created lots of tub-a-losco cattle people out there...heart disease, cancer and a diabetes is what the cow bell crowd get to look forward to.

I used to be skinney as a rake when I was younger then I hit 21 and BAM the weight started to pile on. By the time I got to 23 I had a bit of a belly and was pretty unhappy with my body and my general fitness, my asthma used to also flare up for no apparent reason.

For the last couple of months I've been going the gym three to four times a week and I've never felt better! My weight is stable (72Kg), I'm getting toned up, my asthma is under control much better than it ever was (I can go days/weeks without needing an inhaler) and my general fitness has shot through the roof! My eating habits have improved significantly over the last couple of months too.

Unfortunately, in general most people I know are happy to eat junk food, drink 10 pints of beer at weekends, sit and watch the football rather than play it and generally be unfit.

Unfitness and fatness is certainly not just confined to the US 🙂

<< Almost every half decent pediatrician in the country has copies of Healthy Kids magazine in the office. Think of it as a magazine-sized Reader's Digest with more pictures. Most of the material is germane up to pre-pubescent >>

Thanks for the links BBD. I appreciate it.

I have to believe that there is a similar timeline with the introduction of the Atari. It had nowhere to go but down from there. Be right back, gonna go play Ghost Recon. 😛

Aaah...the bloating of America. Lots of factors at work here, childhood inactivity sets precedence for adult habits, kids are less active as there are fewer safe places for them to run around (hell, we used to be outside from after school til dusk with a break for dinner). Portions get bigger and bigger...and we think this is a good thing by the magic of marketing. The ultimate irony is the amount of money we spend on weight loss products, most of which are total crap, and still get fatter. How sad is it that obesity is now considered a nationwide epidemic? Our very own Centers for Disease Control has a bunch of resources devoted to this problem. The solution is simple: balance your caloric intake with your daily output. We're just too lazy to bother.

"You people just don't understand, obesity is a disease!"

Whatever, CKDragon.

The last time I saw ya, you weren't obese, so why defend that and discourage people who could help themselves? Do you happen to be one of those doctors in the medical entity who are suggesting branding obesity genetic? :Q

Don't get me wrong, I know there are some gentic conditions that could lead to this, but come on! Most of American families are overweight 'cuz of their choices.

Anyway, DaveSohmer, besides the link someone provided you, I think the equation is pretty easy to understand: Don't feed your kids with junks they cry for. Feed them healthy foods like vegetables and fruits. And then once in a blue moon or once or twice every month they can have junk foods.

My parents never bought me junk foods, except once in a blue moon. I had to save the little cents to afford myself any junks I wanted to have, except if I went to a birthday party for instance where there were all of those junks for free.

I am saddened when often I see mothers with sons or daughters overweight. The saddest part is that the mother herself is not fat, in fact she's slender. Then I start to wonder how that could be? I then notice and figure that she or the father buys the kid(s) foods he (or she) seeks. They buy all of those junks like cheese, burgers, ready-made fatty foods, etc. Many times the women themselves don't eat this or eat so little of it, but they let their kids not only eat that on a regular basis but so much of it. Moderation, my firends, is good for you.

Well, on another note: Again, I do not think this so-called epidemic is just hitting poor folks. It is affecting wealthy folks too who must buy their kids what's latest on TV. And then the kids stay home most of the time playing video games or watching TV. As stated, all of those childhood games we had the advantage of playing outside with our fellow friends is no longer visible 'cuz technology is seen as an alternative. Yes, for the poor it might be 'cuz the area they live at is unsafe or poverty cannot afford them a gym, but I doubt one needs do that to maintain a reasonable weight. One can simply control one's food intake and exercise right in one's house. Wealthiness only helps families here in that they can put the burden of staying in shape upon the trainers to help their kids. My sis constantly gets overweight kids and adults to help every week as a personal trainer. Nonetheless, the gym is simply a luxury that is good if you can afford it, but you don't have to be there to lose weight or maintain a good shape.

Don't misunderstand. We are feeding them healthy foods. It is just difficult to always give variety/ healthy foods that they like. Neither of my boys are overweight and they are VERY active. On most Fridays we order whatever pizza they want from pizza hut and let them rent a movie(s), eat popcorn, etc. That is really our only "junk food" night. I don't think one meal a week is excessive and the boys enjoy it.

Indeed, I must have misunderstood you. One a week is not bad at all, of course that's if they don't blow two days meal in 1 hour. LOL! You should be proud of yourself for keeping them active and feeding them with healthy foods (of course with exception to Fridays! 😉). 😀

This was kinda the approach my folks took with my brother and I as well; healthy stuff most of the time with occasional trips to the local pizza joint or over to Saginaw (MI) for chinese food. My mom wouldn't keep chips or soda in the house either...those were also reserved for movie nights and such. The other nice things about where I grew up is that there were acres and acres of woods behind our house with trails to ride bike on and creeks to mess around in (and play hockey on in the winter). We spent a LOT of time outdoors because there was a lot to do and ATARI hadn't really taken off yet. Now I live in Atlanta and I don't think I'd feel good about letting my kids (if I had any) run rampant the way we did as kids.....one of the other contributing factors to kids being fatter, earlier than they ever have been.

Leave the slab o'lard for me... what can I say... I grew up in the south. 😀

ROTFLMAO!! You know there is something amiss when there is "Fried Pickles" on the menus at certain restaurants... THAT'S NO BS EITHER!!!

dfi Yes most stuff does have fat. You really gotta watch what you eat to avoid it. I ate 22 grams of fat yesterday (1700 calories) and that's only because I had a very close eye on what I was eating. I "treated" myself with some hot chocholate in my coffee, but otherwise I was having lean meat, vegetables, juice, etc. It's not hard to crank in 75-100 grams of fat a day. It can be done though and there are a good number of foods that are low in fat and useless calories. The problem is that they don't normally taste as good as crap and we're so used to eating crap we feel underfed if we don't get it.

In regards to dave's situation i know that much be tough but it's good you try. Far too many parents obviously give into their kids lust for garbage. My parents did. My mom used to bring home a 2L of coke and a chocholate bar for us each after school (we'd get mad if she didn't). On saturday morning they'd buy bags of cookies and stuff and my two brothers and I would go through them like a starved rabid dog until about 24 hours later all that stuff was gone - since there was competition we had to get our fill so that the other two wouldn't take our share. I LOVE junk food and I know much of this is because of the fact that it was so available as a kid. mrs. Skoorb likes it but doesn't adore it as much because her parents fed her much better. It's easy to shut kids up with chocholate bars and pizza but you're really doing them a diservice down the road. AFAIK my kids will get a can of pop a week and a treat will be a frigging carrot! I refuse to be one of those housholds with cuboards full of chips and garbage.

here's what American people do at Micky D or any fast food place. I would like a triple cheeseburgers with large fries. ANd can I get a diet coke please.

hey hey, i get a mini meal deal with a diet coke much of the time😛 sugared soda rots your teeth🙂 not to mention give me a weird after feeling in my mouth.

I often get a diet coke also. I figure if my food has 1000 calories, why have an extra 200 from the pop?

I figure it this way... I do good in school, have AP and honors classes, don't do drugs, don't smoke, don't drink, don't steal, don't have unprotected sex, and I don't stay out all night, so I feel that I can order a damn pizza once a week! 😀

(Yea, my life is boring) 😎
