Big fail. Sad to see this is what is becoming of the US.

So the kids who bust their ass in school and get good grades cannot be rewarded in order to spare the feelings of average students.
Why not just give all the students A's and make Honors nights for the entire school.

I was not an Honor student, but my feelings were never hurt when those who worked hard got special rewards. Why are Millennials so soft compared to prior generations.

In a way, the 1970's Mr Rogers "Everyone Is Special" movement really screwed up society. The man was as close to a saint as you could get, but instead of promoting everyone to do their best, it seems the lesson kids took away was "I can skate by and still get all the benefits."

We're seeing the results of this now.

This is nothing new, we've been doing this for the current generation for a while now. We're just continuing with the pussification of America.

My personal opinion is that you should keep company with a few people that are better than you; knowing that you're not the best at something tends to make you want to strive to be better. All of this sparing of kids' feelings is breeding (and has bred, if you look around) a generation of self-entitled, complacent people.

I don't think it's so much his (and others') messages as it is the way people interpreted it for their own benefit.

Everyone IS special in their own way, but not everyone puts their talent to good use.

That's what I'm saying. Mr. Rogers always promoted "You're special, so use your talents to be the best you can be." Kids heard "I'm special, so deal with it." Those kids grew into 1980's and 90's parents, and now we have an over-sensitized society that coddles those that under perform.

Fuck.. I mean I know society needs to be productive, but I enjoy it when I have to compete with one of these self entitled coddled man children. It's like stealing candy from a baby.

from the post in P&N

Sorry but its cut and dry.

High-achieving pupils will still get their awards at a special ceremony, just like always, he said. All he did, he said, was move Honors Night to Honors Day, so all of the pupils could take part.
It turns out that only children receiving awards could attend Honors Night, where they got to hear messages from inspirational speakers. By opening the ceremony up to all pupils, "the kids who need the inspirational speakers" can be there, Fabrizio said.

What he basically did was say that every student now gets a trophy instead of just those who worked hard to exceed in school.

= Everyone gets a trophy, so a special night for the hard workers and achievers turns into an open day for everyone in the school, including the halfwits, fuckups and slackers can attend in the day in some crowded auditorium and maybe get inspired.

Sorry but if you lose, you do not deserve a trophy or rewards.

I can see this useful in College as they have these but having this in middle school is beyond stupid.

cross posting huh?

anyway... i don't know any kid who ever considered getting an inspirational speaker at a school as an award.... even honor students....

it's not like they're giving everyone a trophy.

No kidding; the quote from the principal says it all.

"The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade-point average," Fabrizio penned in his first letter to parents, the station reported.

Hanging out with parents and going to school at night is not how you reward a teenager, it's how you punish them.

The story was reported in Boston, not Baltimore.

And there is no "Foxnews Baltimore", or Boston, for that matter.

I think you misunderstood, or I did. They don't get an award but they can attend the ceremony, hear the speech and see their fellow students receive awards, in other words partake.

Also completely wrong interpretation of what is happening. Now instead of only the winners getting awards in front of winners now they are awarded in front of everyone. Same group of kids getting awarded just during the day amongst the entire school instead of just with the other winners. If anything it is the flip unless you consider getting to hear the speakers the main reward then yes, everyone gets that reward.

amazing how events are selectively misreported, and then people insist on clinging to their bogus view of reality after confronted with facts. fucking idiots in this place.

We're all beautiful snowflakes.

BTW, Finland has the best educational system in the world. They do not really test. There is no competition, grading doesn't start until later grades, and even then is fairly informal. Class sizes are smaller. Teachers make more, and are more responsible to all their students. Struggling students get extra attention.

They finished (lol) 1 2 2 (math, science, reading) in the last assessment they bothered to take part in.

Cry all you want about the pussification of America, which is true, but completely irrelevant in education. The special snowflakers are right, and we need to move to that wholeheartedly not half-assedly as we have been doing.

A private night where the top students watch each other get awards was switched with a day where the shitty students have to watch the top students get awards. Sounds like the opposite of what he wanted to me (make the poorer students feel better), but whatever.

honestly i think we spend way too much time on the struggling kids. i've actually told my teacher friends about this.

i have a friend who is a high school math teacher. there are certain kids who are obviously never going to be even halfway decent at math. but they have to put so many resources into them to make them maybe at best subpar. so what so they can be a ditch digger who can barely do math still.

in a world of limited resources they probably should develop the people with actual math talent. but in america we spend our time bringing the rear up to slightly below average instead of pushing the actaully talented kids as far as they can go. those talented kids, they are the ones going to invent the next industry that all those mediocre kids can work in someday. instead we fall behind.

same applies in art or whatever. we try to make everyone all the way into college mediocre at a wide variety of things rather than actually figure out what they are good at and make them really good at those things. hell the fact that we have scholarship / loan programs that don't take into account what schooling its being used on and what subject goes along with the same idea of not applying resources where they are needed
