I think the Cracked magazine podcast had some long episodes all about those places a little while back, with interviews with people who'd been through them. They sound both horrific and ludicrous. Though the scandals seem to be exactly the sort of scandal you would entirely expect to come out of institutions like that - kind of puzzled in a way that nobody saw it coming.

Huh I wonder what kind of people want to make children suffer. I’m sure they are nice well intentioned people.
