I don't think the chips are binning high. I think it's just and AMD PR smokescreen. Even the initial batches of the 7970 will hit 1000mhz in their sleep. It's an easy overclock for them.

Any proof of this at all? It's only logical that as the process matures the chips will improve.

This

The 7850 is all you really need for almost all of the systems out there. The extra performance most of the time goes completely unnoticed.

*cough* Single-screen peons. *cough*

I AM JUST KIDDING DON'T HIT ME! :D

Seriously, though I do agree about the 7850. It occupies a nice slot with 2GB VRAM too. I gave mine to my gf to power the 27" 2560x1440 I'm loaning her. It does fine even without the massive overclock you can get out of those things.

No proof aside from the endless barrage of FUD and nonsense that the AMD PR machine spews out, plus there's the fact that pretty much any 28nm AMD GPU will hit 1000mhz easily. 99% of 7850s will hit 1050mhz on stock voltage, for example. Mine hit 1180mhz once I pushed for more.

How could you have a 7850 and not overclock it? That's a travesty.

Dude come on, processes do improve, yields usually go up over time. I can't believe there is even any controversy over this. So even if 90% of 7970s could hit 1150MHz core at launch at a specific voltage, that doesn't mean that with process advancements it wouldn't be 99% by today at that same voltage. (not real numbers, just a hypothetical example).

Note I said almost. Yes, eyefinity, and even above 1080 the higher cards get to stretch their legs.

...and I know you were kidding, but I just wanted to agree with you anyway. ;)

I don't doubt that the yields improve over time. What I doubt is the way AMD is spinning this. They should lower prices instead of overclocking for us.

I would be willing to bet that these new chips don't suddenly hit 1300mhz or something stupid. They might be 50mhz faster tops.

You really need to read the original AMD statement. The explanation is quite reasonable. It explains quite well why SI was released, at what seems like, overly conservative clocks.

If their goal was to make less money while still having their competitor's cards be faster in reviews, they would do exactly as you suggest.

I don't read AMD statements any more. I'm done with them. Bulldozer really crossed a line with me.

Look, consumers like me aren't stupid. I'm not going to pay AMD to overclock a card for me, it's beyond ridiculous. Either give me better hardware for the same price or drop the price. AMD is going to lose out big time if they don't drop the 7970 down to $400 immediately, or even lower. The GTX 670 is a better card overall, particularly with respect to power consumption.

The 670 is not overall better and most people don't give a damn about a moderate amount of more power being used.

Claiming the 7970 needs to be that cheap is pure garbage.

Did you by chance miss all the reviews? 670 was faster in some games then the 7970. What sense does it make to have a card that was beaten by another card which is 399.99 be more expensive?

People generally prefer nVidia over AMD as well, at least in my experience.

The 7970 should be $400.

Then what would you do when the competition's product practically halts your sales?

Nine to one ratio in April according to Steam.
Sure it was 680 launch, and Steam data may be less then perfect, but 7970 sales dropped like a rock - there's no denying.
And only THEN AMD lowers the price, and bundles some game, and we're still getting low sales info.

4:1 according to neoseeker

AMD doesn't need to do a thing. The cheaper 7950 can overclock too... To me the 7950/670 and 7970/680 are pretty damn equal. They all need to drop in price.

Nvidia sells them faster than they can make them.

Do you mean they all need to drop in price... like there should be no hunger in the world?

the 670 is only 1-2% slower than the 7970 and about 15% faster than the 7950. I agree they all need to drop but the 7950 certainly needs to drop right now.

Says the man who bought the cheapest 7850 he could get his hands on and then was disappointed with it's performance. Ended up having to buy a better cooler and flash the bios to get what he could have if you bought a better SKU in the first place. If you think a majority of consumers replace heatsinks and flash bios' you're wrong.

Power consumption is precisely what's improving on the newer chips. They're reaching higher clocks on the same power.

We don't know what AMD is going to price the GHz edition cards at. It might be higher, and like you I hope they don't. I don't believe that would be a good marketing decision. Time will tell.

LOL at your Bulldozer reference.
