AMD's Lead With DirectX 11 Is 'insignificant'

Just a bit of spin there. Yes, it's likely the world will see Fermi demoed at CES in January. Which is around 60 days since widespread availability of the 5 series.

Alternatively, he may be thinking 60 days after TSMC fixes yield issues and ATI can sell as many 5 series as users want to buy.

in the big picture, we are all dead...

nvida failed to execute, ati beat them to market... blather to cover is irrelevant...

hope the parts are good when they actually materialize...

I'd agree that it is insignificant, but only because 5850+ was sold out when it was priced good, and now that it is in stock it is priced too high. Though seeing the occasional 5870 for $399 isn't bad, I suppose (Asus on Newegg right now).

60 days?

wasnt the 5000 series launched on Sep 23 or so?
9/23....10/13/.....11/23(60 days)........12/23(90 days)......1/23(120 days)

So, when is he counting from, and when is he referring to?

I'd agree with the language there. AMD having the lead of DX11 is insignificant, but having the lead on their next gen part is (Read: ATI def has an advantage, but imo them being the only DX11 right now really isn't much part of it). But yeah 60 days is just spin, its likely to be 100+ days best case scenario til release

Can't wait for CES! (maybe they'll reveal clocks?)

AMD didn't have DX11 when the HD5800 series launched.
It was only when Windows 7 was released that you can argue DX11 was really out (even though we had DX11 RC's and DX11 cards a month before then), so NV is apparently going to launch in 5 days time, based on these comments.

While I think the article reads like a paid nvidia advertisement I must agree with the assessment that ATI has an insignificant lead. At least the lead is insignificant for now. Mainly due to TSMC's inability to provide more chips to ATI. The problem with small setbacks is that they can snowball. You start out with a little six inch ball of snow and next thing you know, it has collected itself into a monster snowball rolling down the hill.

Lest one forget, it was these little setbacks that put ATI in its current position. ATI had roughly 45% of the discrete video card market with nVidia making up the rest. One little setback after another and ATI found itself with just over 30% of the market. While I don't suggest nVidia will blunder on the scale ATI has over the last few years nVidia does have to watch its step. A little misstep here, another misstep there, especially with ATI having a bit of momentum and we could see ATI regaining some of that lost market share.

Whether ATI's DX11 lead remains insignificant really depends on nVidia at this point. If Fermi is released and is a monster card that completely and unquestionably crushes the Radeon 5xxx then ATI's lead will remain insignificant. If nVidia releases Fermi and it has a lead, but not by large margins, over the Radeon 5xxx then I think we might see a case where ATI has a good chance to take and remain in the lead in terms of DX11 hardware for 2010.

Vista had DX11, if you knew how to install it before the official release.

In any event, I suspect nvidia lost some sales during what is arguably the largest buying time of the year. I'd like to see a poll of who's actually waiting for the new cards versus who just went ahead and bought an ATI.
I'm sure many waited for ATI's cards to come out and then bought one, and I'm sure many will wait for nvidias new cards to come out before buying one.
I agree with akugami on this one.

I agree it is insigificant in the long term. That is because we wont see DX11 be mainstream until these two chips are bargain bin material.

I'm inclined to agree mainly because what DX11 games are available now for you to take advantage of ATI's early support of DX11.

"We're just around the corner from preparing our next GeForce..."

scary subtext. these marketing guys are usually dead-on with their spin, so using a word like "preparing" instead of "releasing" may be significant.

It really depends on how well Fermi performs, is priced, and how available the cards are (but this is probably stating the obvious). In the big picture, ATI's lead to market probably won't make a big difference. Had ATI had massive availability on the 5800s, with 5850s going for sub-$250 and 5870s getting closer to $350 than $450, then I think it would have been a clear win for ATI. Limited availability and price gouging generally isn't a good thing for market penetration.

September 22nd in the U.S. and September 23rd in Europe.

Nvidia could be 6 months (maybe even a year) behind on dx11 and it wouldn't really matter in the big scheme of things. If history has taught me anything it's that it takes a long ass time for new dx versions to matter. It's still bad that they're lagging behind on the next gen, but dx11 is hardly part of the problem.

AMD released their sales figures and DX11 was around 1/20th of the market. So while they probably did lose some sales to those cards, I doubt it affected their overall market share very much.

QFT

Rome wasn't built in a day.

When did DX10 finally take off? It wasn't with the G80/RV600 to my recollection, maybe a year after with the GT200 and RV700 generation of products.

40nm will just get the ball rolling. The real fight for DX11 marketshare will be at 32/28nm.

If early indications of process node choices being publicized at IEDM this past week are anything to go by, Nvidia using TSMC's gate-last HKMG integration at 28nm while AMD using GloFo's 32nm gate-first HKMG integration is likely to be in TSMC's favor. Way to early to speculate beyond the hype though, about a year before we can make educated guesses on how the winds are going to blow on that battle-front.

It's like saying the R300 DX9 support is insignificant too when it was released. Which is right.

However, people bought R300 cards simply because they are faster than the Geforce 4. And you can't fight Radeon 5xxx with vaporware.

Maybe he means 60 days after the first DX11 software. So I guess that's Dirt 2 releasing in December, then 60 days later gives you February.

Well that isn't stopping NVIDIA from trying is it?

Except at the same price point, the Radeon 5700 series is being beat by the Radeon 4800 series. The only advantage that the Radeon 5700 series has at that pricepoint is DX11.

Probably. The expensive cards that we all fuss over make up a small percentage of overall sales, but we make up for that with a larger percentage of the bellyaching :)

Damn straight! and we better keep it up or you know both companies will start slacking.
