AMD's future plans: Keep annoying Intel
The chip giant's scrappy crosstown rival plans to take the feud into the foreseeable future with its new Athlon 2800+, its upcoming "Hammer" chips and a double-gate transistor effort.

Advanced Micro Devices has big plans for the future: to remain firmly stuck in Intel's side.

If the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker has its way, it will continue as its crosstown rival's thorny nemesis for years to come. AMD recently started shipping its new Athlon XP 2800+ processor and is on track to deliver its next-generation chips, the Opteron and Athlon 64--collectively known by the code-name "Hammer"--early next year.

😀

"AMD's future plans: Keep annoying Intel"

I can just see the board of directors at AMD....What can we do to really annoy them? lol

Yes hopefully for us buyers there will be a thorn in INTEl's side, otherwise INTEL will implant it in ours.

In other news, AMD plans large panty raid of INTEL employees...siting that intel has "panties in wad"

If they grab a bigger piece of that lucrative server market it wont matter much that they have lost all the marketshare they had once gained in the desktop market over the last 2 years with the wildly successful tbird and prenoorthwood AMD xp market....Desktop is ot going to keep that business afloat...Another good thing is the fact the flash memory market should make a decent comeback in the next 12 months...Maybe they can rebuild the depleted coffers!!!

It's good that AMD is competitive to a "specific" market but Intel makes the superior product for high-end power users. After investing in those souped-up cooling units that are required for AMD chips, it seems that AMD users have a thorn in their side, especially when it's summer and those chips get hotter than grandma's oven.

ROTFLMFAO!!!

Ahh freak it never mind what I said.... I wasnt think right. I've changed. I've seen the light. SO flame me I guess

BTW AMD does NOT make NIC or PDA CPU's

Look ma, what I've got myself into... 😱

Intel and AMD will never ever die. The buissness world needs compitition. I refuse to be a fanboy of any comapany. Which ever company meets my requirements for my ideal computer system, I would buy their processor. 😀 While, I do like AMD, you will here me making comments about Intel.

AMD really can do it:

Intel has NO x32-64 Processor. Yamhill project is cancelled.
Intel is TRYING to win a LOSING battle again Intergraph over PATENT issues with the Itanium and Itanium 2.
Intel is losing money in R&D (Well so in AMD) and Intel is losing money trying to buy off Integraph (which will not sell LOL)
Plus how can a P4 beat a Athlon 64? You try telling Johnny 6pack that 32 is better than 64?

Intel also has some market in NIC and small PDA processors. AMD is the leader in that field.

I just want a good Barton and I'll upgrade to "HAMMER" once the THIRD generation of Chipsets arrive 🙂

HAHA, that was quite funny. Do you actually believe all that? x32-64 is useless to the vast, vast majority of people now. Why pay more if you don't need it? Intel will have 64 bit down to reasonable prices when we actually need/want it (so will AMD). But now we don't need it.

Integraph is just a blip on Intel's books. Heck by the time the public needs 64 bit processors, Integraph's patent will probably have expired (note the sarcasm in that line). In the worst case senario for Intel, Intel will pay Integraph a one time payment of $250 million and can use all their technology without a single additional payment. That's just a 20% dip in profit for one measly quarter. And that is the worst case senario. Certainly that will have very little effect on Intel's long term survival.

The P4 will beat or match the Athlon 64 throughout 2003, in fact AMD's own 32 bit Barton will beat Athlon 64 (in terms of speed and sales). Now just isn't the time or the place for it. It is nice to know that this mistical Yamhill that no one ever found or had proof of is now thought to be cancelled. Hmmm, maybe it never existed past an idea (Intel thought about it, decided now isn't the time, and moved on). AMD may have a good processor on its hands, but it may flop. Bring this topic up again in 2005 when the public will start to have some desire for 64 bit processors.

honestly i'd give amd money if they became a charity case because i--and every one of you who've bought a computer since the athlon came out--have benefitted immensely from increased competition in the market. but that's just me, and i'm willing to bet the vast, vast, vast majority of you all don't buy stuff based on morality 🙂

You forgot about this one

Intel have long been regarded as one of the best if not the best NIC manufacturers around today and what makes you think AMD leads in the PDA market. They're still using chips from the Alchemy line (the company they bought) while intel's Strongarm has made an appearance and their previous low power cpu did well.

Don't get me wrong, AMD is good but you're just posting misleading info.

Yes Yes... you're all right. Kazeakuma... forget what I said man, I'm a doosh for posting that.

I no longer will waste my time about thinking about a company I cannot control. I'm happy with my 2 intel and 1 AMD system. Enuff from me. Later.

Ah it's ok, at least you have the guts to admit it. I know most people on this board won't. And AMD did make nics at one point (chips anyway) not sure if they still do. And they do make PDA Cpus (sort of) since their acquisition of Alchemy.

AMD XP 2000+ , fully loaded, hotter than your grandmas kitchen if she bakes ice cubes in Alaska all day long.

Thats some low temps on an AXP. WTH man? Is the case open? Is there a case at all?

My Celeron 1.3 is 43 degree Celcius.. stock HSF
My Motherboard is 30 degrees Celcius
In a HP Case (Small has 3 CDROM drives, 2 HDD, 1FDD and looks like an MATX sized case)

Room temp was 56 degrees , so yeah I cheated a little.....but even at normal room temps (70-75F) it idles around 28c -loaded around 31c.

HSF is a Volcano 7+ .

LOL... hmmm... COOOOL

AWW MAN.. I've got a Thermal Take Volcano 7. I WISH I can use it on the Celeron... BUT the HSF is too big and the CDRW hits the HSF and moves it a little and does not make contact on the Celeron. Dont ask how it Hits it... you'd have to see it understand.
