AMD's cool & quiet technology

ok, I have an AMD 3500+, using an asus a8v mobo...the instructions for the processor and for the mobo conflicted on how to enable the cool & quiet technology...so I can't tell if it's actually working or not...I honestly don't notice any difference in the noise level from the fan after I enabled it, compared to before...anyone else have experience with this feature?
 
What it does exactly depends on the motherboard; you might try asking in the CPU/Processors or Motherboards forums. Generally it lowers the clock speed (which lowers temperature of the CPU), and may or may not dynamically adjust the fan speed as well.
 
If I remember correctly, Cool & Quiet slows/powers down the CPU to reduce heat output. If your fan controller is capable of speeding up or slowing down your fan based on (usually configurable) temp thresholds, then yes, it should slow down and speed up your fan. If you don't have that set up (look in your BIOS), then it may not do you much good from a purely noise-only point of view.
 
In most systems, cool & quiet mainly make your CPU runs cooler, eventhough the stock AMD64s heatsink fan does automatically speeds up or slows down according to CPU temp. when installed in current NF4 chipset based mobos.

You won't notice much difference in noise from outside the case though, because the chipset and case fans usually drowns the stock AMD64 CPU fan in the first place.
 
I have mine overclocked to 2475 MHz (225x11) and I have Cool 'n' Quiet enabled. With it disabled it idles around 45 C with the retail HSF, and the fan at about 3500-4000 RPM. Right now it's idling at 1125 MHz on 1.2 volts... the temp is 30 degrees C and the fan is at about 2250 RPM.

I can't really tell if it's quieter cause the rest of my fans are loud apparently... but I'm sure 4000 RPM down to 2250 RPM would be a noticeable difference in noise if no other fans were running.
