AMD's coming out with new dual cores???

😕 I was reading about someone posting something about AMD coming out with the new m2 socket and new dual cores in 2006. Does anyone know about this??? Is it good and if it's true, when in 06 are they coming out? I was at amd's website and didn't see anything about the new m2 socket and new dual cores. But also i'm not that computer savvy my self.

1st quarter 06, the dualcores are basically X2s that have a modified memory controller to support DDR2 ram.

i read on that the dual cores support the 939 socket. is that true cuz i am about to buy a 939 socket m board and hope to upgrade later to dual core

Welcome to the forums. They have 939 dual cores now(X2),they use DDR memory. I think The new (A)M2 will be 940pin.

Socket M2 is over 1200 pins IIRC.

940 is the current pin-out for opterons.

Yes, all dual CPU and higher opterons are limited to 940 though.

There is also talk about AMD pulling 939 opterons off of the retail market and only selling them to OEMs because they are digging into X-2 sales in the enthusiast market.

AM2 (the changed the name) will be 940 pins (but not pin compatible with current socket 940 CPU's. The new server socket (socket F) will use 1207 pins.

Odd, i thought DDR2 required more pins on the cpu. Thx for the correction!

It does, but there are a number of unused pins in the current Socket939/Socket940. They're probably using some of those, and converting some of the ground pins to signal wires.

That makes sense, 1207 is probably in anticipation of multicore server cpus.

The M2 will stay at 940 but the pin configuration is different so not compatible with current 940 pin AMDs. From what I read also 939 will stick around for a while because the M2 won't have a massive improvement factor at first, Similar to DDR2 memory.

yeah its called google

If you really must, buy a 939 because AMD will still make cpus for 939 for atleast another year after M2. If you have enough patients, Id wait for M2. Be careful though, first gen stuff is usually sketchy (mobo and mem).

My choice is wait for Conroe vs M2 to take off before you decide on which to buy.

DDR2 isn't going to do much. I plan to buy soon with current proven hardware. I may wait to see if ATI can put out an X1900XL by the end of January. Ditto with the new 150GB WD Raptor.

Ehh don't even bother waiting. Get DDR before it dies/rises more in price. DDR prices ARE definitely going up. I can swear OCZ VX was a lot cheaper back in May than it is now or even back when I bought in August. ATI? Ehhh I don't even know if it's worth the wait. 7800GTs are unbelieavable deals. It's not even like the old X800XL deals because you know the storm (7800GT) was coming. Instead you got hot, fast, near top-of-the-line cards waiting for you at a low $300. The new raptor may be interesting, but I feel it will be a ripoff...

7800GT prices could be on the way down because 1) nVidia will release the 7900GT in January, or 2) ATI will release the X1900XL in January, or 3) both?

As for the Raptor, rumor over at SR has it that WD will announce two new Raptors at least: The 150GB 10K 16MB SATA150 and the 74GB 10K 16MB SATA150. Seeing that the 8MB version of the latter still sells for around $160, I would expect the 16MB version to go for $199 and the 150GB version to go for around $299.

I currently have a 74gig raptor at the moment, do you know if the refresh aka the new raptors are going to operate more quietly?

I love the performance of the raptor but hate the noise when in operation. Having one that would make less noise would interest me in selling this and getting the new one.

No idea. The Raptor is strictly for performance. I doubt they care too much about noise.

i think those 939 opterons are killing both dc and sc sales, which i think amd should embrace for the enthusiast, hell what is the enthusiast market 10%???.... they should give us a :cookie: for being loyal to them throughout the years (i know i currently have a p4, but it was the first one since my p75 10yrs agao and when i built it i was doing a lot of video editing and then the p4s were killing the amds at encoding..., in between there i had a k62-450, athlon 750, athlon 1GHz, xp2000 and not counting all the machine i had built for my friend which were all amd cpus)

you are not going to get some schmo at best buy wanting to buy a oem hp machine with a 144 in it, a sempron would be a good fit for him/her

In the beginning the M2s are going to be very expensive if they continue to follow pricing like they have been so alot of people wont buy them the first six months I'm guessing. the M2s should help drive down the cost of the current X2 chips so I'm thinking even more people will upgrade to the X2 line. The m2s probably wont look attractive until the latter half of 2006. Thats my prediction anyway. Time will tell.
