AMD64 Too hot?

I just bought an AMD64 3000+ and put a speeze heatsink on it. My system is running great and ive had no lockups but i noticed that my cpu temp is running 66-71 C when idle. Isn't that a little hot? I tried touching my heatsink but it feels warm but not really uncomfortably hot. Is my sensor wrong or should i look for a different heatsink?
 
Did your speeze heatsink have a thin plastic film over the thermal pad? If so, you need to remove it before installation. It's also possible to install some heatsinks backwards, which could cause higher temps. If your sure your heatsink is on correctly, I would try a different monitoring program, or see if the amd cpu cool software is working properly. Some boards have it; and some don't.
 
My heatsink didn't come with a thermal strip. It came with thermal paste. I used a thin layer on the entire cpu top and then rubbed a small amount onto the bottom of the heatsink. As for position of the heatsink. i referenced the diagram in the manual.
 
right now i have a bottom case fan and a rear exhaust fan. I also have an exhaust fan built into the side of the case cover. There is a open grill on the top of the case. The power supply i have has an underneath input fan and a rear exhaust fan. I read the post stating that the input fan being close to the cpu can take some air from the cpu fan so i blocked them from eachother to no avail. Right now Motherboard monitor and soyo's own temp read utility says my cpu is running at 72 C. I dont know what to do. I removed my cpu and cleaned/reapplied artic silver but the temp stays steady at 66-72 even right at post.

 
First of all, the fan does actually run, right? 😱 What exact Speeze heatsink is it?

Secondly, when you removed the heatsink, did the thermal grease look as if there had been good contact between the CPU and the heatsink? Also make sure the heatsink receptacle is fully bolted down.

when i removed the heatsink the paste looked like it had even pressure applied to it by the heatsink. As for the heatsink getting good solid contact i can only go by it mounting correctly in the heatsink cradle on the board. I still think something has to be funny if the heatsink is only warm, and the chassis temp is reading 40C and it feels cool as heck to me. The heatsink i am running is the speeze KestrelKing II.
 
You say the heatsink only feels moderately warm to the touch... I think that if your CPU was really idling at 60-70C, you'd burn your hand off touching the heatsink! 😛

So, my guess is that it's a confused sensor. Is there any way you can test the temperature externally, with a temp. probe or something?
 
A friend of mine had a soyo board and had temps like that. He got rid of the board cause of other issues. Have you checked for a bios update to correct the sensor readings. My 3000+ runs 30c idle/38c load.

My 3000+ didn't run that hot new but it definelty runs cooler since I upgraded the bios. 35C at idle into low 40's when decoding DVDs.
 
You have ECS mobo? i have that same problem too says 66-70c all the time! its fudged up.
yea, ignore the shiz.. i doubht you have any sensor sticking up at all in the cpu socket, all flat right???
 
Just did a search on google about the problem. I guess a few sites that have tested the soyo board have come up with the same readings and then try an independant temp probe and find it to be incorrect. Some state that the temp is 35C when the bios reads 70C. Not sure if i should send the board back or just ignore the readings. Although if i overclock it i would want accurate readings if possible.

Well, 70/2=35 so I'd assume that it just reports double the actual temp. You may want to try a probe, but you should be fine, the Athlon64s tend to run very cool and the heatsinks must be able to cool the hottest possible chip in the series (meaning that they tend to be over-engineered). If you can, enable Cool and Quiet (if it isn't on already), that should help temps some more.
