AMD64 Athlon 3000+ Not Reporting Correct Speeds

Alright, when I first bought this computer, and I went to DXDIAG or System Properties, the system would say

"AMD Athlon64 Processor 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1500MHz"

Now it's saying "AMD Athlon64 Processor 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~790MHz"

What's going on? Is this supposed to happen? Did I change a setting I wasn't supposed to?

Both of those speeds sound low to me. Should be 2Ghz, I think.

700mhz sounds like a mobile chip in battery conserve mode.

If it's a mobile chip, then the different speeds are normal.

It will only run at max when it needs to.

I recall discussions of this problem with mobile athlons and I recall that there is a fix or something. I just cannot think of it right now though. Someone will remember it, i'm sure.

I wouldn't worry about it too much though, unless your lappy seems slow to you. If it were staying at 700mhz, you would probably notice the slowness, so the speed stepping is probably working okay.

this is the POWERNOW! feature kicking in.. it is used to save battery life when you do something intensive it'll run at its full speed

Yeah, no worries, it's slowing down to save battery when you're not doing intensive stuff. In games it'll crank up to full speed and you'll get 100% performance.

Why would you disable it? Unless it isn't kicking up the clock speed when needed, in which case it would be defective... and should be taken back under warranty.

Unless there's another reason to disable it?
