Need one for a friends gaming computer. I have heard AMD makes better gaming CPUs, but is that just the mindset of all hardened computer veterans, or is there actually proof?
judging from my experience my friend has a P4... runs at 60C degrees with retail fan. I have a AMD64... runs at 32-43C degrees with retail fan. I like the coolness
and just click under Processor/CPU reviews and you'll see processor comparisons. Of course the videocard is responsible for 90% of the framerates. So if you get one of these processors, but something slow like a 6600GT, it wouldn't make much difference. At the same time, if you get a faster videocard, you'll probably enable 1600x1200 and highest details, meaning that gpu will be responsible for 99% of the workload, making cpu speed between these 2 even more irrelevant.
Actually, the 3.0C to 754-3000+ is a rather apples-to oranges comparison. To be fair, you'd have to compare the 3.0C to the 3400+, as they are both priced about the same (the 3.0C is $219, the 3400+ is $203, but there isn't an A64 between 203 and 225)
I have both. The AMD is a 3000+ OC'ed just enough to make it a 3200+. The other is a P4 3.2GHz Prescott. I got both on sale at Fry's. The AMD rig was about $40 cheaper ($200 vs. $240.) What amazes me is the P4 is SO much better at SETI@home with HyperThreading. Almost twice the Work Units as it does two at a time. I would guess that a game that is written to take advantage of this would out perform the A64.
And btw if you ever intend to OC I'd personally recommend you go with a 3200+, they seem to have much better chances of breaking 2.6Ghz than the 3000+'s
