What I don't understand is that AMD had all this time with no products coming out, stuck in the WSA and 28/32 nm, couldn't they have put together a small team to die shrink phenom2/stars? Just to see what would happen

That would be a return to a past AMD is willing to forget. The new AMD is all about semi-custom and niche servers.

@ Post 25: Well, personally I am very skeptical of AMD as well, but I am not going to say anything about Zen because it is a completely unknown quantity at this point.

OTOH, I sort of resent it when the OP basically tries to limit what can be said in a thread. At this point, everything is speculation, but I guess we are only supposed to speculate about how great it can be, not that it could be a failure.

Isnt it a bit early for a prerelease thread for a product that may not even physically exist yet and only be simulated for the time being. And with a good 1½ year+ to release? For what point, build up a hype? Because by the OP the only outcome have to be a success.

The Carrizo prelease thread is dead, and that product isnt even released yet.

i can try to limit the conversation to prevent the trite amd doom and gloom from a long term discussion, doesnt mean i can enforce such a thing. i dont see how preventung doom and gloom trolling is preventing you from voicing your opinions.

doom and gloom and negative comments are different things don't conflate them shintai

Maybe its a good time to refresh the minds with what AMD targets Zen for:

Its not exactly performance PCs.

I'm really looking forward to launch. From a performance standpoint, I'll consider it a success if it has better st performance than sand bridge and has more threads than has well at a similar price point.
I don't know how well that would sell though.
No way will this happen. I'll consider it a success if it beats nehalem.

Can we say in this thread that Zen won't be a competitive desktop/workstation product?

By all means, I can't censor your comments.

This is what I mean by doom and gloom:
Amd is gonna go out of business before they can finish zen.
Amd has no r&d budget to finish zen

That gets old too fast. Especially for a thread of a product ~2years in to future.

Any information about Zen is interesting, but a "pre-release" thread seems a bit early, since it will be more than a year at best until release, and could be nearly 2 if there are any delays.

My thoughts exactly, it's rather premature to start this thread. Maybe I should start the "Intel Cannonlake pre-release Thread!" - complete with exclamation point.

Anyway, on-topic, I have no expectation that Zen will be a high performance desktop CPU. AMD gave up chasing performance a long time ago.

Lisa Su, the global vice president of AMD’s Global Business Unit, also put AMD’s future success in unsettling terms. “Our value proposition isn’t necessarily based on technology nodes and CPU performance,”

AMD is going for efficiency so even if their IPC is decent I don't expect it to be as compelling as Intel's performance options. Although Intel is going the same direction so the gap may actually narrow overall. It's up to Intel to keep the performance desktop alive, imo.

It is a little early for a pre-release thread, though I find news of them dumping FMA4 and XOP to be a little disheartening. Just a little.

nothing much to talk about outside supported instructions
still long way to release

OTOH
any news about the skybridge project ?
