(Update) My bad, wrong list

I was on the AMD website looking at the recommended PS for XPs and MAN they started at 460!

I don't get why both Intel and AMD claim to be producing processors with less heat yet they require these enormous power supplys.

hehe texmaster. you can run on a lower end power supply fine. 300 watts will work up to a 1800+ at least. heck we have one running on a 250 watt powersupply. My athlon 1.4 is 300 watts. Though i feel safer if everything was on a 350 watts power supply. anything more is not really needed unless you are dual processing. Though it would be nice to see the laptop version of these CPu make it to the desktop.

You're looking at the wrong list Tex. The 460W PS is recommend for Athlon MP/XP SMP systems, not single CPU systems. There are 250W PS's on AMD's recommended list that are rated up to XP 1800+.

I call them as I see them. The mature people here simply pointed out my error which I corrected an apologized for.

You had to take it down to the gradeschool level so the label fits.

Truth hurts doesn't it?

The total rated wattage of any PS can be mis-leading. The +12, +3.3 and +5v are the voltages that make up most of the total rating. Alot of Ps's don't give a seperate maximum for the +5 and +3.3 combined, its less that the max of the the individuals. AMD was recommending that the +3.3 and +5 have a limit TOGETHER of 145watts, that upto about 185watts for the bigger BIRDS. Many supplies provide 12amps (144watts) or more on the +12v line, which buys you NOTHING, unless you run lots of case fans or peltier cooling. Most systems can get by with 6amps on the +12v. Thats not all, how well is the voltage regulated and what percentage of ripple affect the PS also. Some PS's don't provide stable voltages fast enough if you have a mig mutha Video Card, result is no post.

You should listen to your own advice.
