AMD XP2700+ vs. P4 2.4C???? HELP!

Hey all,

I am in the market for a system upgrade. I know there is TONS of controversy between the two systems, but I just want some opinions. I am considering the xp2700+ or even the xp2800+ compared to the 2.4C. Keep in mind I do mostly gaming and will be overclocking. So, any recommendations? Thanks a bunch in advance!

I am an AMD guy myself, so I'll only give advise on the AMD side. For overclocking, either get a 2500+ or a 2800+. Both of these are based on the newest Athlon XP core, the Barton. The 2700+ is still a Thoroughbred core. You'll get much better overclocking on the Bartons.

how about the 2600? This processor is about a hundred bucks!! Compared to the 2.4c at 180 or so. With a 2600+ am I likely to run it at xp3200 speeds like I've been reading? Mobo will be an asus A7n8X. Thanks

say I have the amd at xp3000, and the pentium at 3.0ghz, which is faster for gaming? I know intel's mem bandwidth leaves amd in the dust.

No one knows how well one processor will overclock vs. another. With overclocking it has and always will be a crap shoot, YMMV. The cpus mentioned here in this thread will perform very well. To the point where no one will be able to tell the difference except in benchmarks. It really depends on how much money you want to spend and what other hardware you have.

And most people have their 2.4C running over 3.2.

OK, well the xp2800+ is the same price as the 2.4C....any recommendations. I narrowed it down to those two. Thanks.

2.4c because dual channel DDR400 is alot better in the i875/i865 than Nforce2 does it. Plus the 2.4 will benefit from fast memory more than a 2800 would. Not to mention most P4 overclock far better than AMD. sure your 2800 can probably go to 3200 but what is the overclock? 300Mhz? I've seen full 1Ghz overclocks with hardly any efford from the new P4

Between a 2800+ and a 2.4c I'd get the intel. But if it were between a 2500+ and a 2.4c it would depend primarily if you wanted to save some money or not.

I have a barton 2500 and i can clock mine up to about 211 fsb with a bit of juice... that is fast... to the point i dont see the difference between it and 3200. So if I were you i would just save a bit of money and get a 2500 barton from newegg and get a really nice motherboard. and since you are upgrading... spend the loot you saved on not getting intel and get a nice 8 meg cache hard drive. those three will make the biggest difference in a pc than just about anything.

Id go for the 2500 XP since you will save lots of money with this and easily get to an 3200XP. If u have spare money go with the intel though. Don't but the 2800 if u are goign to go with AMD waste of money the 2500 is the same thing just priced lower and hasa different name pretty much.

well, you're going from 166Mhz to 211Mhz FSb which makes your CPU running at 2321. That's a 495Mhz overclock from a 45Mhz FSB overclock which is large.

Your typical P4 2.4c will go from 2.4Ghz at 200Mhz FSb to 3.0Ghz at 250Mhz FSB. 600Mhz overclock from 50Mhz bus overclock. only 5Mhz more bus gives you an extra 105Mhz in CPu clock speed

If you arent planning on overclocking, i would go with the xp2800+ . . .. . . im sure it would be faster overall. I personaly think its a stupid idea to buy a chip expecting it to overclock to a certain level. If you buy with that mindset, you will most likely be disappointed. The only thing the p4 has on the athlon in my opinion, is hyperthreading, which is nice. However, if you can live without that, i would go with the 2800.

good luck in your choice 🙂

OK, well I just ordered an A7N8X....now one last questions....should i get the Barton core or the tbred? I have read that this board can unlock some of the multipliers. Is this true? If so, for which chips? Thanks for all the help.

-Collin-

Get the barton, 333MHZ FSB and 512K L2 Cache...there is no reason to get a tbred chip unless you have a thing for inferior chips...Get the 2500+, sock the other 90 bucks into a better video card or more memory, and overclock the hell out of it...

Uh...perhaps you should look up some reviews and see how the two compare?!?! Even a semi-decent review will throw in a bit of overclocking. You'll get more info from that, than the drivel and flaim bait a thread like this invites.

Personally, I think the 2.4c would be the best choice if your budget supports it. Those new Pentium's look mighty tasty!

EDIT...haha...I should have read the whole thread...I see you chose AMD. And you should have read some reviews first!

the mobo doesnt unlock it they come factory unlocked. so whatever you get from a tbred up it will be unlocked for fsb increments. just get that newegg special on the barton 2500 and go with it. just make sure you get some decent as3 and a good fan from svcompucycle and rock n roll. you will love it. i do.
