( BW)(MA-SUPERSPEED) SuperSpeed Software Announces RamDisk XP for AMD Athlon XP Platforms

Business/Technology Editors

SUDBURY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 2001--SuperSpeed Software, Inc. today announced the release of SuperSpeed's RamDisk XP software for all AMD Athlon(TM) XP platforms running the Home or Professional editions of Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP operating systems.
RamDisk XP dramatically improves the I/O performance of all applications running on Windows XP. In tests run on the AMD Athlon platform with the Intel Iometer benchmark, RamDisk XP shows more than 30 times performance improvement over a standard Microsoft cached disk partition on the Windows XP operating system. That translates into up to 10 times improvement in overall application speed for most applications running on AMD Athlon Windows XP systems. For applications that are pure I/O this means up to a 30 times improvement in application speed. The combination of the Athlon processor and RamDisk XP equals extreme performance.
"We're pleased that SuperSpeed has developed this software to complement AMD Athlon XP processor-based systems with the Windows XP operating system," said Lee Little, director of Field Marketing at AMD. "Input/output performance is critical to the overall performance of a system."
A typical user will see dramatic performance improvements in their application speeds, because the disk subsystem is the slowest part of the computer and it slows everything down. In order to access data stored on a disk drive, the user has to wait for the slow mechanical speed of the disk subsystem.
All users need to do to improve application speed is install their applications on RamDisk XP. It looks just like a real drive, except that it is pure software. The software takes less than five minutes to install.
In order to see good results a user should have 256 MB of RAM or more, with a minimum of 96MB required. Fortunately, RAM is relatively inexpensive. Windows XP supports up to 4GB of RAM. Users can install their favorite applications on RamDisk XP and run them at blistering speed with no changes to the applications themselves.
RamDisk XP features a patented automatic backup system to the hard drive. This system is completely transparent to the user. When the system starts up it restores the contents of the RAM drive to its original state when the system was shut down. The user can backup the contents of the drive automatically at any time.

I think this company wins the how much marketing BS can we put into one anouncement award. What on earth does the Athlon XP have vs all other CPUs that makes it perform better vs others with a RAMdisk? They make it sound like it you won't get any benefit from using it with any other CPU. It's a RAMdisk, these have been around for ages, there is no mystery behind how they work, and you can get freeware ones that are probably just as functional as this one. Their performance isn't tied to the CPU either.

Hmm, yea, if it sounds too good to be true........

This things screams, "needs a demo for proof". As for it being Athlon XP specific, it might be highly optomized for the XP core, or perhaps they think that Athlon XP/WinXP users are easily swayed by hype?

there's nothing too good to be true about, it's old technology. hell, windows 95 boot floppies run ramdisks for christ sake.
that said, i've never found a freeware ramdisk that worked very well. Mac's have had great ramdisks for quite a while, though.
