Did MS ever make SP3 more AMD-friendly? The last 2 times I tried to use SP3, I got the reboot-loop issue. I just put a new X3-710 system together, and the SP3 update is waiting....dare I?

You really should consider moving to a modern operating system on new hardware. If you are reluctant to try Vista, then download the torrent of windows 7 7057 and give that a try instead.

So, does no one have an actual answer to my question?

Apparently the problem has been fixed. It is now about a year since it became known.

AMD

I would give it a try. Create a restore point. The best insurance would be to clobne the drive and try it there.

I've installed SP3 for WindowsXP on many AMD X2 and X4 systems at work with no issues ever. The only AMD systems i've ever had the rebooting loop on after installing SP3 are HP and Compaq computers (which is a known problem for which there is a patch).

If it is a custom system, then it won't be a problem.

If it is a factory system, then open a command window (Start-Run-cmd-ENTER) and type "sc config intelppm start= disabled", without the quotes. Note the space after the "=", but not before.

If you have the incorrect setting, this will resolve it. The problem isn't with AMD, but lazy manufacturers. They set their systems to take either processor, and it wasn't an issue under SP1 or 2, but because of the updates to the core kernel in SP3 it puts you into a loop while it tries to find an Intel CPU
