Hi,

I'm running an XP 2400+ on my Abit KT7a rev 1.3 KT133a w/o any problems. I wanto to upgrade to an XP-M Barton 2600+ w/ FSB266. Any experiences with that? I know the chipset isnt officially supported but the fsb, the voltage, the socket ... all seems to match.
any ideas? thanks in advance

Why the hell would you upgrade your chip before your M/B lol. Your chip is fine for now, get a good Nforce 2 board (Asus Abit, DFI) and OC the hell out of that chip.

I tried a unlocked desktop XP2500+ on a Asus A7V133 KT133A board and no good. It would post but instantly fail loading Windows, memtest or whatever. You'll also have to manually unlock the higher multipliers if it does work or else you'll be limited with the lower end which is <12x I believe.

Heard about good XP-Ms will go up 2600Mhz. Raw CPU Power is what I need (calculations and stuff) so memory bandwith doesnt really matter. Thats why I think I dont need a new mobo.
The thing is that you really do not hear much about experiences with xp-m and kt133a

@wobble wobble
maybe it depends on the mobo revision. I have the newest - V1.3 - which runs a TBred just fine

Mine is the 1.05 which is the 2nd newest behind 1.05.

In general T-bred support on the KT133A is a hit and miss already. I haven't seen many reports of a Barton working on a KT133A but I've read it has been done. Good luck on that. :)

thats like putting a v8 in a geo metro. there are other improvements besides the type of memory that allow newer boards to run faster processors. your mosfest, resistors and voltage regulators cannot support the newer cpus, hence no support. give it up. buy a new board or be happy with what you have.

This guy is right. Do what he says. If you OC your proc, you will see benefits. It just makes sense. You may also need to buy ram also. Not sure what you have.

Thanks marsumane! You also bring up a good point. Are you using one of the KT133's with SDRAM or does it by chance have DDR. If your using SDRAM your CPU is crippled to no end. Even if you dont want to spend a lot of money get the Shuttle AN35N-Ultra which is very very good board, for the person who doesn't need all the features.

Good Luck

Hm, yes my board uses SDRAM. Okay, maybe you all are right! the thing is that I'm using 1024MB Infineon CL2 SDRAM. Seems I have to be happy with that. Dont wanna spend all that money for similar ddr. Thanks to all of you
BTW: For all interested ones, here one interesting link ddr. vs. sdram
game performance kind of similar but not that desktop stuff like content or winstone.....
check it out here:

http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=sdrvsddr&page=8

I thought it would be vice versa so that game performance lacks w/ sdr but not office & Co, which is more important to me. So thx again!
Marco

Edit:
But wait, maybe that would be another good reason to "upgrade" to an xp-m. pc133 slows down my system at all. i cant clock my system higher that fsb150 because of my locked cpu! with a xp-m I could go even higher up to fsb166 (the memory is capable of it). Is that a "good reason"??

it should be doable
i ran a 2400+ at 2.53ghz on the asus a7v classic
and it only had the kt133 chipset :)

2500+ 1700+ and 1800+ all worked on it too

edit: i also have a msi kt133a board running a 2000+ just fine (but can't overclock for the life of me)
