Hello all,

I want to continue to run my A7N8X deluxe for another two years. I am going to be ordering some water cooling when I get my fat rebate check ( that way the wife won't notice until it's too late hehe). I plan on trying to overclock the processor. My question is this : What is more advantageous the 3000+ FSB being listed at 400mhz or the mobile 2400+ running cooler even though it is only at 266mhz FSB. I have DDR400 ram so of course I would want to run the system at 400FSB although if the memory can't take it (PNY) then I may have to step it down to 333mhzFSB so I can go higher.

Appreciate any input, thanks.

The XP-M will probably go farther. Many have reached 2500MHz on air. I probably wouldn't pump money into watercooling for Socket A at this point, though. (Scratch this, maybe--I must have had a misunderstanding about watercooling in general, or my brain was just off. In any event, I apologize for my uninformed comment.)

With overclocking socket A in mind, the choice is obvious: XP mobile. Unlocked multiplier and 1.45v stock voltage. You can always play with the mutiplier and FSB settings which you can't do with a desktop AXP.

I thought about doing water cooling so that way when I upgraded in a couple years that I wouldn't have to buy a new fan. Or does that logic not make sense ?

There is no FSB difference....

See, what I mean is.... both can more than likely take a 200 MHz FSB just like say the 3200+ which is why so many people get the 2500 and it will run at 3200 speeds... now the Mobile 2400 is no different. Drop some PC 3200 in there (if you have it) and run it at 200 MHz or higher and you will be golden. If yhou have like PC2700 or something run it as high as you can and then make up fvor any differences with an increased multi. It really is that simple.

I have an XP-M on my KT266a. Although i have not / can not try faster FSB (than 266Mhz) I do not think it will be a problem as most XP-M are barton core (check www.newegg.com - they tell you what core you are lookign at) so should work at 400Mhz FSB just like other Bartons.

The thinking is that the XP-M are the best performing Bartons that AMD sorts for in their production line (that can opperate at the lowest voltage so have the lowest power consumption) that is what makes them the best over-clockers.

My 1.8Ghz XP-M is overclocked to 2.16GHz very stabley with an old Cooler.

Why not? All you'd absolutely need to upgrade when you go over to another socket (say, 939) is the waterblock. It's not like getting a different motherboard means your radiator needs upgraded.
