I didn't see any reviews posted here and this is the first one I've seen.

The performance is very good but the 800 MHz FSB P4 @ 3 GHz seems to slightly edge it in most cases. Note that AMD's new processor is now running at 400 MHz FSB and there are new chipsets from nVidia and VIA to support it.

Either way, both sides of the fence are sure to be pleased. :)

Wait until that processor is paired up with an nforce3 board and some 3700 memory ;)

I think it's high time that AMD re-evaluated their PR number scheme as I think the 3200 is too high.

The problem is, they've already made a 3000+ CPU so they've dug themselves into a hole. Maybe they could use 3000++ or something. ;)

Yup... 3200+ is a little steep when you look at the benchies. Even the Price is not that hot (at least for the moment) with the corresponding P4 costing slightly less. I suppose you also have to factor in the expensive 875 board to get those number in the first link, then the AMD is a bit cheaper.

I was expecting that people would be all over this like a rash.

I guess not. ;)

You know BFG10K, I think at this point we're gonna see a lull in the industry. Both sides are just gonna take a breather and try and sell as many CPUs as they can between now and the next release, which is quite a ways from now.

I dunno, I think AMD will shake up the industry if they can quickly ramp up the clock speeds of their new Opterons.

Neither company can afford to sit around and not do much.

EDIT: typo.

Hmm, $464 (thousands pricing) is certainly less than the ~$600 that the 3000+ cost at launch. Not too shabby, although it's out of my price bracket right now. A 2500+ maybe...

Considering that theres a performance penalty by running async, as noted as early as the KT266a days, I dont think you would want that.

Fully Canterwood boards are about $150, not that far off from a fully loaded nForce2.

Nice that they finally put that 400mhz FSB in. I agree the rating number is off. Maybe they should have put it at 3100+. Do any of you now how far AMD intends on pushing the Barton?

No, a fully loaded Canterwood (875P) board is more like $185-200 actually. Fully loaded nForce2 boards are much cheaper. In fact, you can get a fully loaded MSI nForce2 motherboard with the exact same feature-set as MSI's 875P motherboard for $55 less, and you get integrated GeForce4 MX graphics to boot with the nForce2 board. The MSI 875P board does has a little better RAID support and Gigabit Ethernet that utilizes a separate bus (Intel CSA), but if you're truly interested in good RAID performance a PCI RAID controller is the only way to go, and of course Gigabit is useless for the vast majority of broadband users.

Its an interesting and fairly good performing CPU, but that's about it. It doesn't even begin to compare with the P4 3.06 or the P4 3.0C, let alone a P4 3.2 when it comes out. As Tom's Hardware pointed out, it should more aptly be named an AXP 2800+, but as you've mentioned they sort of dug themselves into a hole there. Anyway, many 1700+ owners have been enjoying such levels of performance, or even higher, for a while. A 3GHz P4 will still be faster in most cases though. The only thing it might have over the intel P4s is the price advantage.

It'll be interesting to see how much of a clockspeed bump Intel will provide in their next batch of CPUs. Will they go to 3.2 GHz, or will they go one step further to 3.4 GHz or faster?

Typo has been fixed. ;)

I wonder how my 1700+ compares. It is running at 215x11=2365mhz and I got a pcmark 2002 score of 7308. The barton 3200+ gpt a score of 6858.
