Well, I want to overclock my mobo, but I'm worried it might fry...
I'm using the heatsink + fan that came with my CPU.
I'm wondering if my CPU will fry if I OC it. [CPU Temp usually ~45-50C]

Specs:
A7N8X Mobo
512 DDR
XP 2500+ Barton

Don't worry about frying the chip with the retail AMD heatsink and fan. You may be able to run at 3200+ speeds without increasing the default voltage (1.65v), but you might have to increase it to 1.7 or 1.75v for stability.

Bump the FSB to 200, keep the voltage under 1.80v and you should be fine with the retail HSF. Once you're stable, monitor your CPU temps and see if they are acceptable to your standards. If they are under 55C, you're set.

Good luck and welcome to AT!

Hmm, My mobo manual tells me that the FSB is double the "CPU External Frequency", so I set to 100MHz, and now it's actually running slower. (1.09GHz) Should I set the CPU External Frequency to 200?

Thanks in advance!

The part in the manual refers to the speed of the Double Data Rate (DDR) RAM you are running. The default FSB for a 2500+ is 166 (166x2=333), so putting the FSB at 100 is effectively underclocking the CPU.

What speed is your DDR? ie, PC2700 (DDR333), PC3200 (DDR400)...

If you want to run at default speeds, put the FSB to 166 in the BIOS. If you want to shoot for 3200+ speeds (2.2ghz), then bump the FSB to 200.

I tried to set the CPU External Freq. to 200, but my computer wouldn't boot up, so I had to reset bios.

yeah you're reading that backwards ninjaburger, it refers to actually doubling the fsb after o/c (200 = 400 with ddr), not already being doubled. Also, weasel is right, you won't harm your mobo or anything else what so ever with a little o/cing, just don't raise the voltage too much, and you can't do any harm. it's basically unheard of.

they should change the phrase "overclocking" to "mild fsb adjustment" because it sounds safer to those just starting.

I'm going to assume your multiplier is locked.

CPU MHz = 11xFSB speed.

So to get 2000MHz, you need 11x181MHz FSB.

my memory settings are sdram active precharge delay 8
ras to cas delay 4
precharge delay 4
cas 2.5t

are these correct or do they have to be cahnged in order to work better?
