AMD XP 2400+ Retail or Not?

googlegear has the 2400+ Retail with heat sink and fan for 191. Without for 160.

Is the retail fan and sink OK or should I get a seperate set? The retail product indicates a 3 year warranty. I did not see any warranty info on the no retail package.

I plan on doing some simple tweaks but no extreme oc'ing.

Thoughts appreciated,

Gary

I'd highly recommend you get the retail version either way. With newer Athlon XP motherboards allowing for unlocking with having to connect any bridges (Thoroughbreds, anyways) it would be wise to have a warranty in case ANYTHING were to happen.

If you're just going to be using it for normal use and anything were to go weary, it would be nice to have the luxury of being able to send it back. If you're going to be running the CPU at stock speeds, the provided cooler should be all right (at best). If you have the extra money, invest in a better cooling solution. If not, then do note that the CPU will run slightly hotter than one may like to have it operate, but it will still remain well within the heat resistance of the Athlon XP (i.e. it won't fry if you use the retail cooler, just not be cooling the CPU the best)

Peace

The heatsink should have a copper bottom, so it should be a pretty good one. Mind you not as good as some aftermarket ones but better than what use to come with the retail.

Also you do better waiting 2 more weeks for the proice to come down.

Need to purchase this year.

Regarding the warranty, from the AMD site. There is no warranty for the OEM version from AMD and if in the retail package, you use a different HSF, warranty viod.

Somewhat of a delemia. Do I see how well the retail HSF holds up with the tweaks I do. If all looks good then great, else, strip it off, clean it and go aftermarket...I guess.

Thoughts?

purchase the xp 2400 from staples, and have them match googlegear's retail price. Then apply the $50 coupon to the purchase, and you have your retail XP for the price of an OEM.

Just got my XP2400 in the mail today :D

Seriously, I am looking for a new Athalon, too.
I just bought a 2100 XP for one PC, and am in the market for another.
That seemed like the sweet spot at the time (NewEgg - just over $100)

I advise retail over OEM, too.
I agree that the retail fan looks pretty good, but I bought an aftermarket fan (volcano 7 for $15) anyway.
The warranty is the strong seller.

The OEM processors do not have an end-user warranty of any kind from AMD themselves. AMD (and Intel) warranties the OEM processor for one year to whichever company purchased it from them in bulk. Most of the time the OEM part gets transferred through a distributor or two before it reaches the reseller. The warranty length gets reduced because it's a hassle in terms of time and money for the reseller and distributor/s to handle, plus the clock is ticking on the original warranty. Yes, if it takes one month to sell an OEM CPU, they only have 11 months left on the warranty.

That being said, some companies offer longer warranties. Newegg offers a 1 year warranty for a few bucks (at checkout where you enter credit card info, look towards the bottom above the button you have to click on). TCWO.com offers a 1 year warranty if you purchase a HSF with the CPU. Unfortunately they don't have any, ahem, "interesting" HSFs to choose from, but you can probably just choose the cheapest one, and use it for something else. Sometimes this ends up still being reasonably cheaper than retail boxed while still giving a longer warranty than most of us would keep a processor (baddabing!).
