AMD XP 2200 running at 90 Fahrenheit?

I just replaced my motherboard and so had to reinstall my cpu, an Athlon XP 2200 (Thunderbird I think) which is currently running at 1.6 Ghz on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo with 1 GB RAM...no OC. When I boot the mobo though, I hear the voice report of "cpu fan failed"...which is actually not true. The fan is spinning, as are the two other Antec case fans and the PSU fan of course.

My temp though in the BIOS reports CPU as almost 100 Fahrenheit, which seems too high? Also..computer has turned itself off and on three times now in two days at random times...once while it was in sleep mode.

Is 95 or so Fahrenheit too hot for an AMD chip? And if so...what could be the problem...more Artctic Silver needed? I put a little smear of past about the diameter of a oh....what's that small....half a #2 pencil eraser I guess...and then reapplied the heatsink/fan when I first installed the Asus board. (stock heatsink with a panaflo something on it). Have been using the same heatsink and fan for a year on that same chip when it was on the other mobo, but now on the Asus it seems hotter?

Thanks for all help and suggestions..I'm just confused by what's happening.

whew..heh...now any idea why my Asus mobo is reporting (via it's voice warning)..that "cpu fan failed"?

Weird thing to hear for the first time wearing headphones lol.

Whats a CPU fan header?

The power for the fan is kinda daisy-chained into the IDE power supply cables...you know...that white power plug for the fan plugs into the white female end of the same power cable that goes to my HD.

That's all that's needed right? There is no other plug to plug into the mobo for statistics reporting or anything like that....this is why i have no idea why the mobo reports "cpu fan failed".

Three pin header on the motherboard. Provides power to the heatsink fan. The A7N8X has a header for the CPU fan, power supply fan and a case fan. It takes a small, 3pin connector that provides power to the fan and rpm data for the motherboard.

The CPU fan connector is next to the front RAM slot on the far right side of the motherboard.

True, but if the CPU is cool, don't worry about it. The voice diagnostics on my old A7N8X Deluxe drove me insane so I just disabled them.

I agree; however, if there's one fan to have monitoring on, it's your CPU fan. The board should be able to shut it down on a fan failure to avoid damage - but then you wouldn't know if it had actually failed or if it was just the voice diag giving you another false negative.

generally temps are posted in Celsius. Makes things easier. i hate math.
I use Google 🙂. For example, to convert 98F into C type in "98F in C." It works for a lot of similar conversions.

thanks for the type. i get lazy but since Firefox has a built in google field, it's easier.

honestly, i just cheat .. -32, divide by 2. it's all approximate anyhow.

i don't trust that voice anyways. my ram can pass 24 hours of memtest, and 1 week of prime (lol assuming i don't personally force crash the pc) while i still use my pc normally....and it loves to say "Memory Test Failed" about 1/3 of the time

neat trick🙂 thanks!

and yea, 90deg? thats practically body temp🙂

OK, I'll rule that out as the cause of my problem then....(computer restarting on it's own at random times)

Must be the mobo or PSU then? I know it's not Win XP because it restarts on a clean install on another partition also.

Any idea how to narrow the problem down? The mobo is a new refurb from newegg and I still have about 11 days I think to return it if my "refurb" is "re-defective". 😉

Try swapping PSUs then, if that doesn't fix it, your motherboard is probably flaky. What brand\wattage is your PSU? Can you give us the amp ratings of the 12V, 5V, and 3.3V lines on it? They should be on the sticker on the side of the PSU.

Well, the obvious answer is to swap in another psu to see if that solves it.

If you don't have access to another unit, look into d/l a free copy of MBM5 (Motherboard Monitor 5). I've seen where peep's worried about fluctuations from the psu causing your problem. They said they set MBM5 to record system power every 5 seconds (create a log). Then when pc hickups, go back and look in log to what was going on with the power rails. Never had this prob so haven't tried it myself. Link to d/l MBM5

I'll try the MBM software...and thanks for that link.

I DO have another PSU that I just bought from COMP USA in desperation (really hate that place like everyone else), but I just don't think it's the PSU. Reason I think it's mobo is because the same PSU that runs this Asus refurb that keeps re-booting used to run the Epox board that died on me almost two weeks ago. If it was the PSU..wouldn't the Epox have had the same problem and shut itself off and on as well?

My system by the way is in an Antec case (the Alienware looking one (not the flared out sides "Alien" one)) with an Antec 300W PSU. Bought it new from newegg I think it was, and it's been troublefree for over a year now.

The COMP USA PSU is a COMP USA brand 300W as well, and I actually did try it with the old Epox board when I was troubleshooting it....but haven't tried it with the new Asus.

It's gotta be the Asus....

Same.

muaha! im running 33C with 2600+ M @ 1.575 voltage. teehee.

anyway, as for that cpu fan failure message you're getting, check and make sure that the fan's pin is in the corect one (the one that says "CPU FAN")
