AMD XP 2000+ OR extra money for Barton 2500+

I am doing an inexpensive upgrade for a friend. I am looking for an opinion on whether it is worth the extra $23 to go from an AMD XP 2000+ (266 fsb) processor to an AMD XP 2500+ (333 FSB) Barton processor. It is my understanding that the 2100, 2200, & 2400 are not worth the extra cash because the 2000 can be OC'd well.

So, what do you think? Get the 2000+ or pay the extra for the 2500+?

the little extra for the 2500+, its no slouch but its no speed demon, Iv got 2000+ and its starting to show its age a little, i am going to wait till early next year before i upgrade.

If you decide to go with the 2000, 2200, or 2400, go with the Thorton version rather than the Thoroughbred version. They run cooler, and overclock better. My 2400 thorton will do 2.25 on air... and that's without an AGP/PCI lock and the multiplier on 15 (which is stock).

O.K. In looking at Newegg, I discovered that the new Athlon Mobile 2400+ processor is slightly cheaper than the 2500+ processor.

Are the Athlon Mobile processors better than the traditional Athlon Barton processors? Maybe I should consider the 2400 mobile?

If the board that you're going to use will support the mobile 2400+ and your friend is into overclocking, go for the mobile 2400+.

The mobiles are "unlocked" which means they're very overclockable. Regular bartons may or may not be unlocked (most likely not).

Indeed, the mobile version should overclock better, and at lower voltage. I'd go for that in a heartbeat.
