AMD XP 1800 + Shuttle AK31 rev3.1 = sigh

I received two XP1800+ chips, two shuttle ak31 rev3.1 boards, two Enlight ATX cases w/ 340watt power supplies, and 6 256meg PC21000 DDR micron DIMMs on Friday. After many hours of troubleshooting and time on the phone w/ tech support, I ended up sending the motherboards back. After construction, neither system would post. Everything spun up... the power supply, the fans, but no beeps and no post. I reseated everything, unplugged the mobo (to make sure there was no short), and plugged in the bare necessities... no dice. I had an old 1ghz AMD chip lying around, and was able to get one box to post with that (but not the other), but not the other. I flashed the bios on the box that did post to ak31s2e9, hoping that it would now recognize the XP1800. Again, no dice. I read on Deja that sometimes higher watt power supplies needs some time to warm up before turning the computer on... tried that as well to no avail. I am about to order the Epox AKHA+ today, but I am afraid it might have been the ram or the case that was causing the problems (I seriously doubt that both retail processors were bad). Anyone have a similar experience? Any ideas?

I had no problems at all getting my AK31v3.1 to post on the first try with a Athlon XP1800. I have a 400watt PS though. There's quite a lengthy post in "MotherBoards" about the AK31, I'd suggest checking that out for some ideas.

I also have the shuttle board w/Athlon XP 1700 and havn't had any problems. It reported the wrong processor originally, but after flashing the bios, it sees the XP 1700 no problem. Hard to beleive that you got 2 bad boards.

Try using 1 memory module, most DDR boards seem to have problems with more than 2 DIMMs

I had the same problem initially but after taking a minimalist approach (video card and 1 stick of RAM) and adding components in one at a time, I was able to get it to post. The problem came back for a short time but after I flashed the latest BIOS it has been rock solid.

I've heard enough complaints about this problem that I would probably get a different motherboard if starting new.
