AMD X4 965 or X6 1055? Need quick help!

I'm upgrading my home server (running Hyper-V with a couple of virtual machines) from an Athlon II 250 to a Phenom II X4 965, but I just realized my motherboard also supports the X6 1055 and it's only $10 more from NewEgg.

The difference in clock speeds are 2.8 GHz and 3.4 GHz so it seems close but I'm not sure what other differences might apply.

I really only need four cores for the virtual server but I think it might make more sense to go for the six cores?

UPS is scheduled to deliver my X4 965 in a few hours but I can refuse delivery for no stocking fee at NewEgg so I need some quick help! :)

The two extra physical cores would serve you better in the future. If its only $10 more and no penalty, I would take the 1055.

If your motherboard has solid BIOS support for the 1055 then go that route.

Thanks for the quick replies.

My motherboard is an ASUS M4A78-E and the website says it has support for the following CPUs:

Phenom IIX6 1055T(HDT55TFBK6DGR),2.8GHz,125W,rev.E0
Phenom IIX6 1055T(HDT55TWFK6DGR),2.8GHz,95W,rev.E0

I'm looking to order a HDT55TFBGRBOX. It should work, right?

Yep. AMD has yet to release the 95W versions. You may have to re-enable virtualization support in the BIOS if you have to flash to a newer one, btw (it was set to default: Disabled in my Gigabyte board.)

Edit: edited for clarity

Make sure you flash the bios to the lastest BEFORE you remove the old CPU.

Get the 1055T

My impression with Thuban v. Deneb so far is like Cypress v. RV770. (x1.5 instead of x2.0, of course) More cores should help virtualization almost always. How much memory do you have?

Thanks again for all of the help!

I've flashed the motherboard to the latest firmware so I should be all set :)

Right now I have 8 GB DDR2 ECC RAM in the system. This is really just a fool-around home server so I think I'll be set now for a while... (especially when the Hyper-V memory over-commit service pack is released)

VMware ESX/ESXi already has this ;)

I'm actually alittle surprised the 250 x2 doesn't provide enough power for a home server. Is this upgrade really required? :D

It makes no sense to go 965 BE with the 955 so much less. The difference between the 955 and 1055 is $50 or 30% of the 955's price.

I'd shop better in the future, newegg will eventually start charging for these kinds of mistakes affecting those that did their due diligence ahead of time.
