Amd x2 vs my Northwood 3.2

How much of a gain in performance would i get in switching to an Amd x2 3800 as far as video encoding, photoshop, dvd decrypting and dvd shrink? I can find benchmarks with those 2 cpu together

Huge difference, simply because most of the programs you use are SMP-aware, and can use both cores to maximize performance.

It would be probably at least double the speed in most of those areas. The type of work your doing, many software have the compability of using the dual cores or you could do multiple tasks at once without both programs fighting over cpu usage.

Photoshop is a multi threaded app, so theoretically you would see a two fold improvement with the use of that application although I don?t think that would actually be the case .. im not sure but i think DVD decrypter might be aswell.. at the moment there are very few native multi threaded apps available so the use of dual cores are not yet in their prime ..

i think in single threaded apps the performance would be similiar .. as the 3800 X2 runs each core at 2Ghz, and that is equivalent to two 3200+ cores .. where a 3200+ is comparable with a Intel 3.2Ghz proc and you already have a 3.2Ghz proc .. and also you benefit from using a Northwood instead of a Prescott

Does your Northwood proc have HT enabled?

EDIT: silly mistake 😱

Yes I have HT enabled. Do i get one now or wait until they go 65nm or is the next Intel duel core(Canroe i believe) going to be a great performer

the 2ghz is the 3200, not 3000

single threaded perfromance should be the same or better.

oh yeah silly me LOL thats what i meant 😱 (im tired maybe its time to go bed now 😛) .. in that case going buy what i had previously said, i agree with you "single threaded performance should be the same or better"

You will definatly get a good boost from those types of applications with a dual core. Here is a thread we have comparing some X2's to a vapochilled pentium 4 running at 4.4ghz encoding DVD's to DivX using AutoGK.
