AMD X2 Retail Processor Warranty

I got the retail processor and decided to go with an XP90 for cooling. I see in the paperwork with the processor that the warranty requires the use of the included heatsink. That seems nuts, since almost any aftermarket heatsink is better than the one included with the processor.

Anyone had a warranty problem due to the use of an aftermarket heatsink? I don't imagine that warranty comes up too often with the processors anyway. I doubt they would be able to tell what heatsink is used anyway.

Well if you're going to use an aftermarket heatsink, you're probably going to be overclocking. And OC'ing voids the warranty anyway.

The only company I know that allows aftermarket heatsinks is eVGA. 🙂

The warranty is not nuts. It allows AMD to honor it at its own discretion. You do need to retain all the materials that came with your "Processor In a Box" in order to exchange it if need be.

AMD isn't going to bust your chops unless you obviiously abused the processor. Just don't bring up the subject of the aftermarket heatsink. I had to return an XP 2400+ Thoroughbred and they sent me an XP2500+ Barton. Then I had to go buy a new mainboard that supported higher bus speeds. It's now running as XP 3200+. 😛
