I currently have a Dell Inspiron 531 that is just TOO little. I want to upgrade to a bigger case, but in order to do this, I will need another motherboard as well (Dell's have special HSF built in.

Here is a list of the current hardware I will put in it:

AMD X2 5600+
4 X 1GB PC-6400 DDR2
EVGA 8600GTS
550WT CoolerMaster PSU

Please recommend me a motherboard and post links if possible. Thanks!

Well, I assume you will be looking for a decent budget board that does not break the bank and no Crossfire/SLI capability. In that case it's got to be the 770 boards. Have a look at BIOSTAR's TA770 A2+ more info can be found in this thread. Also of note is the slightly more expensive Abit AX78 more info in this thread. However, for your needs and CPU there would not really be any merit in buying the more expensive AX78, in which case I'd recommend the Biostar.

Appreciate your help, and I like the BIOSTAR, but is that brand any good?

I am not planning on doing any SLI, but maybe a bit of overclocking. Just need a good simple board with the latest chipset that is an upgrade from the Dell 531 motherboard.

Anyone else?

meantime it's $82 at mwave http://www.mwave.com/mwave/Dee...riteria=ax78&ALL=y&TP=.

Another thought is that even though you have a discrete gfx card that it may be worth considering a 780G chipset board to get the better SB700 southbridge.

Are you saying that the 780G's onboard video is better than my 8600gts?

No, just that you will be paying for an IGP that you won't be using in order to get the better southbridge.

Can both of these BIOSTAR and FOXConn 780G boards take pc2-6400 800mhz ram?

Yes, both take the standard DDR2 800 (PC6400) 240 pin RAM--if that RAM worked in a standard Dell, it should work fine with any standard motherboard.

DAMNIT! Just bought the BIOSTAR TA770 and realized the CPU power connection on the mobo is 8 pin, my 550wt PSU is on a 4 pin 12v!

Time to cancel.

What else?

8 pin, my 550wt PSU is on a 4 pin 12v!

The eight pin connector should come with a cover over four of the holes...I don't think that the system you are putting together is a high power system that will need the 8 pin connector.

So I can still order this board?

I did request them to change the order to this board:

GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H amd 780g

Which one do you prefer?

I think so; but, if your order is not finalized (??), perhaps you should go with one of these that has a 4 pin connector:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128342

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813138112

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128341

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131320

Note: since so many comparable boards use the 4 pin style, that implies to me that 4 pin is enough...

4 Pin: you can see this on Newegg's product photo link:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...ro+ATX+AMD+Motherboard

Gets sort of tepid reviews from Newegg users, but these must be taken with a grain or two of salt....

So do you think I can go with the BIOSTAR TA770 (I like it because of the eSATA) since it has the 8 pin and my PSU only has the 4pin.....or should I go with this Gigabyte one?
