AMD X2 4400+ Owners: Stock HSF or OTHER?

I will be buying a retail 4400+ soon and am debating whether to stick with the stock HSF or buy a Thermalright XP-90 with a 92mm Evercool fan. I don't plan on OCing, so I want an HSF that will keep the CPU at safe temps but also be QUIET! So, should I stick with the stock (heat-pipe) HSF or go more exotic?

(The HSF will be installed in an Antec P150 case.)

Stick with the stock hsf since you're not gonna overclock. Just get a quieter fan and put it on the stock hs and you'll be good to go :)

Any idea what size/type? I haven't seen a pic of the stock 4400+ HSF.

I'm using a scythe ninja w/ a slow speed 120mm fan, and I'm running an Opteron 275 (basically an X2 4400+) at 2.7ghz in an Antec P150 w/o front cooling fans. It's quite quiet, and since it works for an o/c, I'm sure it would work great on a stock system.

Someone correct me if im wrong, but aren't all x2 hsf's the ones with the heatpipes? I'm not sure what size the fans are, i think they're either 80mm or 92mm

If you're not overclocking, use the retail HSF. It's more than adequate, and the retail fans are pretty quiet.

DO NOT modify or replace the fan on the retail HSF. It voids the warranty. If you ever need to RMA the CPU you must also send that HSF back with it - they're matched (the HSF usually has the CPU's serial number on it).

Actualy the stock is pretty good even if you are overclocking, I am using the stock heatsink with my 4200+, and I get 51c under full load, overclocked to 2.618ghz with dual prime95. S&M only gets it to 52c but kicks the fan in to high speed.

I agree. In my experience that stock AMD HSFs are very good units. They run cool (even with the stock pad) and are very quiet.

IT does not void the warrenty I think. AMD approves of a few specific aftermarket heatsink/fan solutions for tha A64.

Modifying THEIR heatsink DOES void the warranty. And as far as I'm aware, unless they've changed their warranty, using anything but he stock HSF on a retail CPU also violates the warranty (although it's impossible for them to prove it). OEM cpu is different.

Irregardless, the HSF has to be returned with the CPU for the RMA and if the HSF has been altered in any way you're likely to get denied the RMA.

I'm using a Thermaltake silent boost K8 for my XP 3800+ X2 CPU,I did not bother with the retail unit, nice and quiet plus 95% copper, using Arctic ceramique paste too, temps are low about 34c idle and in low 40s at load.

As for warranty voiding you do need to use the retail. In general CPUs are very reliable.

This Limited Warranty shall be null and void if the AMD microprocessor which is the subject of this Limited Warranty is used with any heatsink/fan other than the one provided herewith.

Well, sounds like I should save $60 and stick with the stock HSF.

I just bought a AMD Sempron 2800+ Palermo, and it's almost inaudible. If the 4400+ HSF is just as good, I see no reason to buy something more exotic. Though the Sempron does run a little on the warm side.

no not all x2's have the coper heatpipes..
theh 3800 x2 comes with a regular cooler (no heatpipes)

the opteron 165 2x1.8 comes with a cooler with copper heatpipes.
