AMD X2 4400+ Expectation w/ AM2 Release

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new system w/ a X2 4400+ processor, and I was wondering if we thought the prices would come down when the AM2 processors come out? Is it worth it to wait? What do you think? Thanks!

There will probably be a single price drop because the 5000+ will come out. 4 months is a pretty long wait, though...

Yeah, you're right. I'm not in a big rush though, my current system is working fine, but money is money...😉

You might briefly have the chance to get a s939 x2 a little cheaper, but expect to see ddr ram prices rise over the same time period - once the bulk of AMD systems are also using ddr2, ddr will be completely obsolete; it's already more expensive than ddr2 most of the time.

The 4400+ fell within my personal highest "range" of price for any processors. I would never spend more than $650 (CAN Dollars) for any processors, and just last week my local store had a 4400+ for $640 (taxes included).

So I had to decided just yesterday (I made a thread about it) between a 3800+, a 4200+ and a 4400+. So I got the 4400+ since there was one left in stock. Kind of an impulsive purchase, but it wasn't exceeding my budget !

I, also, wanted to wait for the M2 socket ... but after discussing some topics with the seller I finally told myself that Socket 939 will stay for a long time still, perhaps what, at least a good year and half, maybe two years.

I mean, they still have to release the X2 5000+, which if I am not mistaken will be S939 (right ?). And Socket M2 won't provide actual noticeable performance gains in gaming, according to what I've been told, and read around on the web. Personally I'd say that, right now, going with Socket 939 is far from being a mistake.

But going with 939 in say ... a year, well then that'd be another story. Time will tell.

I dont think the 5000+ is going to be released in socket 939. That said we should see socket 939 CPUs for at least two years, since AMD promised OEMs that they'd be in production for a while.

No one really knows whether or not AM2 will provide a performance improvement in games. AM2 will have a tweaked revision (F) of the A64 core, combined with the 800MHz DDR2 RAM. It's definitely possible an AM2 cpu will have better performance clock for clock vs. 939. But also possible it wont, you can't say for sure right now.

EDIT: I've only heard of the 5000+ being released on socket AM2.

I got a 4400+

I figure, when I wait 4 months and buy something, it is just that, 4 months further out dated.

Also, if I waited 4 months to buy something new, like an AM2 socket, I could wait 4 months from then and get that for even cheaper.

You can keep waiting for price drops and new hardware, but you will never be able to decide.

I say go for it.

Well, to my thinking, its not like we're 1 month away from AM2's release and not much is known on its performance. If you need a new system, you might as well buy the best you can afford/need whatever. AM2 will have many issues anyway until it gets stable. The "fun" of being an early adopter is you get to pay top dollar and beta test new tech. 🙂

Yea and then a couple of months later they abandon the thing in favour of somthing better. I have owned socket 423 and then after that socket 754... I was not a happy chappy 🙁
