OCed the AMD X2 3800+ to 2.4 Ghz and the chip already hit 55C just for converting audio CD in itune. At idle, it is about 42 C.

Hence I am thinking of just doing a 10% OC to 2.2 Ghz to try out.

These are the values for a 20% OC.

High performance mode [Manual]
Aggressive timing [Disabled]
Dymanic Overclocking [Disable]
Adjust CPU FSB Frequency [240]
HT Frequency [4x]
HT Width [down 16 up 16]
CPU Spread Spectrum [Center Spread]
SATA Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
PCIE Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
PCIE CLock [100Mhz]
SSE/SSE2 Instructions [Enabled]
Cool 'n' Quiet [Disabled]
Adjust CPU Ratio [10x]
Adjust CPU VID [Startup] - Leave your vcore at 1.4V, & raise in small increments if you cannot get stable at 2.4GHz (stay below 1.5V to be safe)
CPU Voltage [?] - IIRC, this is for adding additional vcore by percentage. Don't worry about this for now, unless your mobo is undervolting
Memory Voltage [2.7]
NF4 Voltage [Auto]

Also, you may need to lower your RAM speed (use a divider) if you have PC3200.
I would go into RAM settings & set the divider for 166, assuming you have PC3200 memory.

Can someone give me the values for a 10% OC?

Eveything should be the same except this:

Adjust CPU FSB Frequency [220]

What heatsink are you using? The stock one? If so then that's probably what's leading to such a high temperature.

Using a Zalman all copper large cooler.

Was your temp at stock much lower? If not then your heatsink might need to be reseated or your motherboard may be misreading the on-die sensor. You could try undervolting your CPU to check this.

I agree unles you have absolutely no cooling to extreme poor, or an ambient room temp in the mid 80's I cant see how you would have such a high idle temp....

At my OC in the sig with vcore boost I only idle at 30c. I see your concern cause if you loaded both cores you likely would be in the 60's....

I have the same cpu, and the same mobo, and an XP90. But first I used the stock cooler. With that on, and the case closed, and both cores, it got to 58c or so. With the XP90 on, I get 480-50c full load both cores, so something is amisss. And that is at 1.46v, 2570 mhz.

Hey guys I have the MSI platinum as well and I get high temps too my 3800+ idle at 49c running at 2.6ghz. I think its a readout issue with the board.

I think some peopl have bad chips and some people have good ones....
Much more of a probability for bad chips, since if one of the two cores are bad, you will get a bad processor, while with previous 64s, you only needed one of one to be good.

Of course I hope that the zalman heatsink and cooler was seated wrongly but chances are low because it was installed by the shop I purchased from, which installed system frequently.

I won't want to try re-installing it myself.

I was hope that it is because the AS5 is still not burnt in yet.

I have a feeling even without OCing, which I will try to set it back to stock speed, the CPU temp may still be the same.

Are there any third party software that i can use to measure temp so that I can verify if it is the MSI software mis-reading the temp?
