AMD will reduce suggested prices on select processors

Effective April 9, 2007 AMD will reduce suggested prices on select processors sold through authorized distributors.

AMD X2 Series:

6000+ - 49%
5600+ - 43%
5200+ - 24%
5000+ - 26%
4800+ - 38%
4400+ - 30%
4000+ - 28%
3800+ - 27%
3600+ - 22%

AMD FX Series

FX-74 - 20%
FX-72 - 25%

and of course the Sempron and Athlon line as well are dropping.

I was gonna spring for a 5200+ in the near future, but it looks like I'll end up with a 6000+!!! Is there anything new on the horizon that is driving these prices down?

An X2 6000+ should be in the neighborhood of an E6600, performancewise, at stock speeds, right?

It currently retails at $450ish...so if it does drop 49% to $230ish...it should be a very attractive alternative.

If this is true, AMD may finally begin to move inventory, but man it's going to kill them in the bank account. The idea of AMD's most powerful processor (excluding 4x4 quad) costing only $230~ is hard to imagine.

Perhaps AMD really wants to get rid of their spare inventory before moving beyond K8.

Yeah, but the E6600 will be that price too. Again, it'll come down to overclocking or not. If not, then IMO with AMD you can have slightly cheaper motherboards.

Any idea if the price cuts will apply to the older S939 models? I've had my eye on an S939 X2 3800+ (currently $115 @ Newegg), but I'll wait if the price is going to drop.

Of course, if AMD has stopped manufacturing S939 chips, the price may just be a function of supply and demand @ the reseller level. Seems likely.

just a guess, but i don't see 939 prices coming down... it would be mighty friendly if they dropped the still in production opty prices 20+%!!!

Moving inventory isn't a problem by a long shot...that's why they keep increasing marketshare (in fact they are currently at the highest marketshare in their history).
It's the margins that have been the problem...
My guess is that you're right, AMD is phasing out the K8 in anticipation of the K10 release.
