hey guys...I am tech and can fix or explain most issues but this one is just a little odd
here it is
I have a k7s5a by ecs mb with an athlon xp 1800+ on it
now it always said my external clock was 66mhz right from day one...i didnt pay attention to it becuase it still ran at 1528mhz...not far from the 1533 its supposed to run at
but then it would dump its bios settings if i turned it off and would not start untill i hit f1 and reset them to spec again...again no real biggie...bad battery right?
well...now its doing things like detecting as a duron 1400 when all the freqs are at 133 for ram and cpu (2100 ddr)
is this a common ecs board issue or do i look at the cpu..?

Could be that the BIOS was totally lost when the CMOS battery went completely dead and on each reboot it is loading the original preprogrammed BIOS from the NVRAM on the BIOS chip which wasn't originally programmed to support an Athlon XP 1800+ so it's saying it's a Duron instead? Just theorizing a bit really...

There is a small silicon diode that serves as a fuse and as reverse current protection in the CMOS battery circuit. It is easily zapped if you touch the wrong circuit board traces and pads to metal while installing your motherboard in the case. A clever person can find the diode with a multimeter and solder in a replacement.

father has same rig and he's never had any probs...been building pcs for 10 yrs and ECS is my favorite OEM board around...maybe you need to flash your bios to the new version...Ive used at least 10 of those boards and all have been rock solid except once in a while the bios will automatically reset to the default settings but its a harmless known issue

Have you tried flashing to the latest bios? What version are you using now?
Tons of info on k7s5a's can be found
here.
I would try replacing cmos battery, flash to latest bios, after flashing clear cmos, then go in and configure as per normal. GL
