I'm looking at buying a used A64 3400+, but AMD site states that the warranty applies only to the original purchaser? Has anyone ever puchased from joe average user and been denied warranty?

They didn't require a receipt when I RMA'd a A64 3200+ Just the numbers off the HS and to send back both the chip and the HS.

Any idea if a retail heatsink from a similar proc can be paired up with the dead one?

I have an Athlon XP 2000+ that died, and was a retail, but I lost the HSF for it. I got the HSF for a 2200+, but the manufacture date on the two chips is probably a year apart, so if that serial number on the HSF indicates packaging date, that's an automatic giveaway to AMD that this wasn't the original HSF. But, I do have a copy of the reciept showing its a retail proc.

So what're the odds this will go through?

slim to none and you have a 200 chip barely worth 40 if that your best bet is just to snag a 2500 or someth

Worth isn't a factor. It's a free device. A 2500 = $80. A 2000 new is $50 or so.

That's the dumbest rationale I've ever heard. Would you toss $40 onto the street and walk away from it?

Depends. I'm most curious if they're willing to take the RMA with proof of retail purchase, if I *don't* have the heatsink.

Does anyone have any experience with this scenario?

What are (all) the numbers off the heatsink? If they use the same product date code as all AMD manufactured items, you can tell the year, week, day and location of manufacture. If it's an obvious mismatch, they probably won't let is slide. OTOH, if there's just a part number on the HS, you may be okay.
