Problem:
Some softwares, and many games refuses to run on a Virtual Enviroment, when using a Intel CPU, but they run properly on an AMD machine.

So does Anyone know how to configure VMware into not revealing the CPU type? or fool the software to think it's on a real machine?

I have other system with Intel CPUs (same problem), also other AMDs (works as expected), and this can be reproduced quite easily.

The problem are mostly with Anti Virus, Anti Hacker, Anti-Spam, Anti-etc... type of softwares

I've been able to nail it down to the difference being only running an AMD CPU vs an Intel CPU.

Current System Spec:
- Asus P5B Deluxe
- Sound Blaster® X-Fi? XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series
- Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz / 4MB Cache / Dual-Core / Socket 775 / Retail Processor with Fan
- Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster
- 4GB RAM (2x) OCZ Dual Channel Gold XTC 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB)
- ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon X1900 256MB GDDR3
- LG GSA-H22L 18x Super Multi DVD RW + LightScribe (Black)
- 1 TeraByte! (2x) WD5000YS WD RE2 (RAID Edition) SATA 500 GB, 3.0 Gb/s, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM
- PSU 600w Xion PowerReal
- SONY Internal 3 1/2" Floppy (Black)
- Dual 19" LCD HannsG HW191D
- Sunbeam UV Reactive Acrylic Case
- 150GB (2x) WD Raptor SATA 74 GB, 1.5 Gb/s, 16 MB Cache, 10,000 RPM
- (5x) SilentX 14db Quiet Fan 80mm

This is the sort of software that will usually attempt to see if it's running on 'real' hardware or 'virtual' hardware, since they have to hook into the OS at some level and software like VMWare can sometimes mess that up.

That said, I don't know why running on an AMD CPU would be different than an Intel CPU. But I mean, changing CPUs also means changing motherboards, chipsets, and a different Windows installation, so there could be other things changing as well.

Odd... I run VMWare ESX on some Intel Dual Core Xeon processor servers, and the virtual CPU's show up as a Xeon in both Linux and Windows. Is it somehow different in VMWare Workstation?

I remember in the past, as in way back around the versions 3.0 or order of the VMware, they never reported the actual CPU type, that seemed to have worked better than now.

I wonder if there is any switch to turn that On and Off, that can easily help me resolve the problem i'm having.

I doubt it has any relation to the motherboard, since i can repeat the same problem with Intel based CPU systems on other machines using different motherboards.

Like my old Dual P3-1000 system, or the same problem on another Intel P4 (Dell).

It'll be nice if there were some sort of hack to make a VM machine look like as if it were running on an AMD machine, instead of the Intel machine, then i can run those problematic software in the VM machine (saying AMD) meanwhile the real host is an Intel machine. :)

update
hey interesting, I was on the right track all along, read...

related answers:

and
http://chicagrafo.blogspot.com/2006/02/pacfica-vs-vanderpool.html

interestingly enough seems like the Theinquierer.net also had coverage on that topic. (links in the blog)

Well all the info from the blog and theinquierer was rather "hypothetical" situations.
But we (I) saw first hand the clear differences in AMD vs. Intel in real life applications and problems, that can create.

Thanks to some unknown guy, that was nice enough to put my original question into the right place to be asked

Who would have though to post in a CPU market place area to ask for such a technical question, LOL :r
