I suppose we all know the answer to this, but do board manufacturers honestly think they're going to make a killing on nF4 IE or the 955X? Maybe if they're supplying OEM's, but I thought most DIYer's favor AMD, no? I started a thread a couple of months ago complaining about why Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, and EPoX are putting out nF4 IE boards with passive cooling whereas their AMD nF4 boards feature small and noisy active cooling, and, as you can see, the thread got a little off topic.
Now AT's new article on the Asus P5WD2 Premium shows Asus touting a "Fanless Design" on a 955X board. Does anyone here even plan on buying a 955X board? Is it just me or is anyone else tired of having to add an extra $10-12 for a passive Zalman chipset heatsink everytime you go with an nF3 Ultra or nF4 chipset? As far as I know, only Gigabyte and Tyan have released nF4 boards with passive cooling, and there are countless #'s of forum members who've used the Zalman ZM-NB47J on nF4 chipsets. So I think it's pretty clear that passive cooling on nF4 (and definitely nF3) is possible and practical. I just wish motherboard manufacturers would put in a little more consideration for AMD64 users.
