AMD vs Intel Dual Core

A friend of mine said that if I had no intention of overclocking that a pentium was better than an AMD, just wondering what you good folks thought about it. I don't run a lot of highly demanding programs just several instances of several different programs simultaneously. Here's a rundown of what I'd like to be able to do lag free.

4-8 tables of poker
watch a downloaded or DVD video
run several browsers and several instances of them
Burn CD/DVD

I'd also be running 4 HDD's and 3 Monitors (4 if i'm running a DVI to my HDTV) probably with two pci x16 cards not in SLI

Anyway, any responses would be appreciated.

Apparently after me copy/pasting your responses he has repealed his statement saying that I didn't specify dual core when I was talking to him, heh, thanks anyway guys.

Even if you were sticking with single core, Unless your rig was built primarily for encoding, I would recommend AMD every time.
