Because AMD Athlons require special fan cooling solutions , does this this mean that AMD based systems are significantly noiseier than their Intel counterparts ?
As I am considering getting a 1Ghz Athlon based system , this question is important for me .
Thanks.

Depends on the fans I bet.. my P200 is more loud than my AMD K63, but guess which has more fans? And you'll have the same amount of fans, just ones better at head dissipation is the point..

And, besides all this I doubt I'd give the Pentium at those speeds any less cooling.

AMD systems do not require fans any more powerful than equivalent Intel systems. The reason you here of fan noise as an issue for Socket A chips is simply because more people in the hardware community are (smartly) buying AMD chips as opposed to Intel chips, and high performance fans matter to these people because they tend to overclock.

HA did you see the fans in HP 1gig PIII systems that went to retal a few months back? It had a huge fan pulling air in the side of the case through a hole.

aviwil, you can pick up a mastercool or a taisol HSF that are relatively quite and work quite wll at keeping the cpu cool.

That HP had one sweet case. It was an In-Win, though I forgot what case #...
