AMD Turion X2 mobile processor

See title. Daughter got a lappy from HP with the AMD Turion X2 mobile processor. I'm just wondering how it compare performancewise to my old rigs I'm still using. It came with a Geforce 8200 graphics so I'm hoping she can run MMO's and Sims 2 reasonably well.

What speed ? I would guess it would beat both of your rigs...Until you tell us the mhz, not sure, but a 2 ghz Turion should beat them both easily.

I think it is a 2.2 Ghz, its on the HP Pavilion G60-445

I had the feeling that even what is now considered a slow processor by todays standards is still faster than my Dell or my home built in the siggy. My daughter is used to playing games on both machines so her graphics card is the only thing that is the other major factor.

The Turion is faster than either of your current processors, especially thanks to it being dual core

Uh, I'm inclined to disagree. The 6600GT should be noticeably faster. Even his X800SE should be faster.

If my daughters laptop performs nearly as fast as my old clunkers, she should be happy. She wanted to get Sims 3 but the guy at the store said it would play but you'd have to set the game graphics down lower - or medium maybe.

8200 is pretty darn slow, sad to say. It should be decent if you crank it down to 1024x768 and low/medium detail though.

The laptop is running native at nearly that resolution, only the screen is wide so its more like 1300x768 so it should be ok for my 14 year old daughter from the sounds of things. This 8200 isn't trying to run 1600 x 1200 type rez.

Graphics, I thik it will be slower than both also

I really really suggest to upgrade the hard drive to a 7200 rpm. This is the only update that in my opinion is mandatory in a laptop.

Oh damn, I forgot something crucial to get the most performance out of that sucker.

(1)- Go to laptopvideo2go.com

(2)- Get the latest .inf enhancer/patch file to match the driver set you want

(3)- Get some current/recent Nvidia drivers

For whatever reason, most OEM notebooks with nvidia video have really old drivers, and just trying to install the latest from Nvidia won't work (it says something like no supported hardware detected IIRC). Anyway, the .inf patch unlocks the driver to work on notebook drivers.

Going from old drivers to current drivers can fix graphics glitches and increase performance in many games. You could also try a *very* mild overclock, so long as you keep an eye on the temps. I'd try to keep it 5-10% at most over stock, notebook cooling usually isn't the best.
