AMD Turion vs. Intel Centrino

Hello!

I need to buy a laptop for my sister. I have narrowed down to 2 choices, both from HP's business line:

1)HP nx6125- Turion 2.0 model PZ118UA cost $1,249.00

2)HP nc6120 - Centrino 1.86 model PR126UA cost $1,379.00

I know the Turion has better specs but my sister doesn't really care about the fingerprint reader or Bluetooth. I am a big fan of AMD (have 2 64bit desktops) but Centrino is a more proven mobile solution. I have heard some problems concerning Turion's multitasking.

Which one do you think I should get?

Thanks,

Turion for performance? On many reviews they have the Turion 2.0 slower than the Centrino 1.86 and they say that the Turion has problems with multitasking. Also Pentium M has only about 20 min extra battery time, which I do not think makes that big of a difference.

Relax dude! I wanted to know which you guys think is a better deal. The Turion is cheaper and has more features, but has the problems mentioned above. Maybe someone has the one of the laptops and can comment.

"on many reviews"....post ur sources...and dont forget the one at gamepc.com sukcs, and ive not seen "many reviews" of the Turion elsewhere.

Bingo.

I would say a Turon 64 2GHz > Pentium M 1.86GHz overall. However, give it a week or two and you'll have a full article on Turion vs Pentium M

other way around, actually if anything the Pentium M is competing with the Athlong 64 Socket 939, not the Turion... I wish I could say other wise unfortunatly... =/ I dislike Intel, and for the most part despise the pentium 4... however I have to admit the pentium M is in no way the pentium 4. The Pentium M is a much faster and more Powerful CPU.

Um............................k

A Socket 939 A64 only has one thing on the Turion: dual channel memory. DC gives you MAYBE 5% performance increase. Otherwise the features are the same, just at a lower clock speed.

Pentium M is in direct competition with Turion, make no mistake about it.

Thanks all of you for your posts!

I ended up ordering the Turion, cause it is cheaper and has the DVD burner. Also I read in some forums that the nc6120 (centrino) has some fan problems. Though they should be soon fixed with a new bios update, I did not want to risk it.

Thanks again,

The Pentium M is beating the Turion by a 27% in battery life (48% in the idle test). That's certainly a lot more than 10%.

It's also very impressive to see the Pentium M win the encoding benchmarks even when the Turion has the faster hard drive. The Pentium M is also running cooler, even when the ambient temperature is hotter.

Certainly not very impressive results for the Turion 2.0 getting beaten in almost everything by the PM 1.86. Still, it's not much of a margin, so if the Turion is significantly cheaper, you might as well get it. In this case, I don't think the difference between $1249 and $1379 would be enough for me to get the Turion.

Yeah, I'm waiting for Anandtech to release their article about the Turion. I guess AMD needs to make a few revisions on their mobility chips before they can be the true and unquestionable alternative to the Pentium M line.

It all depends which review you are reading. One review does not make it right. Look at this one. It says that the turion has battery of 3:28 while the Centrino 3:40.

Yes, but in this case (with HP) the centrino has heat/fan problems, while the turion does not.

It is not only the $130 difference. The Turion also has dvd burner, fingerprint reader and bluetooth. I decided I wanted these features!

Anyway all the reasons above made me get the Turion. I received it today. I will play with it and let you guys know how it is.

Well, it's not like the PM blows away the Turion. Given all the other circumstances with the HPs you're looking at, I guess you pretty much have to go with the Turion.

Guys, I wouldn't pay attention to "notebookreview" or that GamePC review. If you all *ahem* check out the site soon (like 24 hours soon) we'll have an in-depth review on the Ferrari 4000 posted: this includes performance/battery life comparisons between the Centrino-brother to the 4000, the Acer 8104.

Also, we have a full Pentium M vs Turion article in the works. The benchmarking for that is almost done (INCLUDING DDR400 CL2.5 testing on the Ferrari), with a good look at the architecture of both chips.

Bear with us, we'll crack this baby wide open 😀
