AMD 'to ship half a million RV670s'

WE HAD A TALK with several AMD reps last night, and they're claiming that AMD is going to outship Nvidia in the 8800 vs. 3800 battle. So far, Nvidia's partners have told us that GeForce 8800GT came to market somewhere in the 40-50,000 unit range (overall, including OEM and retail sales) and there is a shortage right now.

The funny thing about launch events is that now you have reps from companies that ship both Nvidia and ATI parts and those partners are openly stating where problems lie. It is pretty interesting to hear about very poor allocations for one of the top Graphzilla manufacturers, where the available numbers of parts were 8 to 1 in ATI's favour.

AMD plans to ship around 500,000 units of Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 by the year's end, with the accent on single-slot 3850. According to orders, there should also be a substantial number of 3850s combined with 512MB of memory.

The guys are certain that price points of 179 and 229 Euro (includes average VAT figure in EUroland) combined with DirectX 10.1 and full UVD decode will spark considerable interest from the market.

Only time will tell who is really going to ship more, and who'll be in higher demand for Yuletide shopping madness.

That's a comforting news. I'm planning on getting a 3870 and then move to a 790X/FX board with Phenom next year (along with another 3870 or better).

according to anand they should have a couple hundred thousand available in the next few weeks. of course, many of those will be 256mb, but that much availability plus 3870 hitting market at 219 is bound to bring 8800gt prices back to reality once availability ramps up.

I think the 8800GT launch articles said something to the effect, "Only about 50,000 cards (manufactured by Foxconn) will be out at first. Flextronics boards should arrive around Nov. 15th"

Everyone, set your browsers to auto-refresh 😀

ATI simply surprised Nvidia with these cards. They were forced to release a product (G92) made to save money on the high-end at a lower price than intended and with a confusing name.

And they killed the sales of GTS and GTX cards with this same move.

The good news is that they will probably release a new high-end card sooner.

I wouldn't say they suprised Nvidia, AMD has been talking about this product since the release of the hd 2900xt. It does look like Nvidia may have dropped the ball here though, are they that out of touch?

I doubt they are out of touch, in fact, I believe it is the other way around. They used the 8800gt to take out a bite out of the positive PR ATI/AMD was going to get from the 38xx and I really doubt if they plan on making it in its current form for very long. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if nVidia was losing cash on the 8800gt or merely selling it at the break even point to retain their status as "The company" in the graphics card world. Taking a hit now would lead to customer retention and thus future sales on more profitable lines. When I say I don;t see the current 8800gt sticking around long, I mean that a card with its performance and price will exist, just with a die shrink or some other means of cost cutting in the (near) future.

that's bs imho. if newegg is OOS within 15 minutes, there aren't very many of them available yet.

Newegg isn't the only store in the world you know. Usually stores will order a certain amount and reorder once that shipment has dried up. At least newegg has ETA for their next shipment which means more rv670 is coming.

true. who else has them available right now? diamond's web site for 245 shipped. anyone else? ncix for 255 with "limited availability", whatever that means.

They just released today. give it some time for rv670 to go into circulation. All these people ordering and buying up store like newegg was expected. After all newegg is pretty popular among hardware sites.
