AMD to power Wii U

"multiple display support."

I wonder if it will be able to do something akin to eyefinity.

The pessimist in me says they're referring to the 6" display built into the controller.

I don't think that's really that pessimistic; considering the screen in the controller is the big gimmick of the Wii U they'd be pretty remiss to not mention it.

Well it's pessimistic because the optimist in me would hope they're referring to running 3 TV displays at once. 😉

That would be pretty cool but I guess it would only work for pretty simplistic games that could get good frame rates at 3x the standard resolution.

Have you seen wii games? Pretty sure a Sega Dreamcast could run most of them without a problem.

^^It's more like no one really cares to push the limits of the Wii's hardware. Who makes a Wii game with graphics as a major selling point? Who buys a Wii game because of the graphical experience?

On topic: This was rumored before E3, so it's no surprise. I wonder what chip they'll use, or if they'll make an entirely new chip. It would be interesting if there is Eyefinity tech underlying the controller screens.

AMD was only mentioned to be providing the graphics. My guess is that the CPU is a PowerPC processor similar to the Wii and Xbox 360's processor.

Its so annoying they don't disclose actual hardware specs. I read this random post on some other site:

Graphics: Custom AMD RV770 Chip “WOLF” @ 766 Mhz on 32nm process 1398 Gflops
Video Memory: 1GB GDDR5 + 16MB eDRAM
Memory: 512 MB XDR2 DRAM
CPU: Custom IBM Power 6 Chip “FOX” on 32nm process
4 cores, each two way SMT – capable and clocked at 3.5 ghz

If true, that would be a 4870 class GPU which would be awesome. I can't imagine what they would be able to do with that kind of power on a console. Remember, the XBox 360 has a hybrid Geforce 6800/7800 which back in the day was competing with Radeon X850's and X1800's. We are talking about a 6 fold increase in graphical horsepower if that is accurate.

More video ram than system ram? Seems unlikely.

The GPU in the Xbox360 is an ATI/AMD chip, not a Geforce.

IBM has said the Wii U or Triple-U is using a Power 7 CPU. IBM is also providing the RAM for the Wii U.

Nintendo likes to be secrative now after what happened to them with the Game Cube specs compared to the PS3 & 360 specs with the press, bloggers, & fanboys.

Actually the GPU in the Xbox360 is a Microsoft chip, designed by ATI. I do not believe AMD is selling Microsoft any chips.
My Google-fu says they get a royalty (NV too for BC) for each chip sold. Probably not much but its free money.
I'm guessing AMD is just bolting Hollywood onto R700 to provide BC.
