AMD to launch Phenom II x4 975

Wonder when they're going to start upping the CPU-NB. 3.6Ghz is pretty useless without the CPU-NB to keep it fed.

Also wonder how this thing will OC.

The PII-975 would be pointless if it couldn't at least beat i5 at 4GHz when OCed.

IMO, AMD should really have something that is at least as good as i7-920 to be able to compete with Intel.

I concur with both points. It's pathetic that AMD is binning NB @2200 MHz (not that it's ground-breaking) for its server products yet leaving 'Black Edition' CPUs' NB @2000 MHz. And Deneb is currently stuck (I mean, STUCK) at 4.0 GHz hard ceiling, so without a break-through in its manufacturing, this SKU would be pointless for enthusiasts.

And the return of 140W. Where is a progress?
 
Makes me wonder who in their right mind would buy it, I'll laugh when forums get flooded with people upset they only managed a 200-400mhz overclock on these. It's the Athlon X2 6400 all over again. But I suppose they need to do something to improve their stock performance, not everyone overclocks.

I think the good news here is the 910e. Now at the $140 - $160 ish range it would be fn awesome for a 65w quad that rivals the Q6600 and Q8200 at stock for HTPC users like myself.
 
What i want to know is when is Amd going to release a quad that can actually take on an I5 or don't they care and just release these weak ass things to please the fanboi's?

We know their road-map. We won't see bulldozer for some time yet... THis is common knowledge no?

They can't just will a competitive quad into existence because they want it really bad. I'm not sure I understand the "don't care comment"... Of course they care.. caring and ability to do so right now are totally different beasts. It is not like this release consumed development time. "Yeah, we have nothing to release.. just sell those at a faster bin."
 
I highly doubt they will release the 975; I'm pretty sure there's something else coming down the pipe.

Well, it's going to give you the same performance as the Previous PhII's at 4.0GHz assuming the north bridge is of identical speed.

I'm sure AMD would prefer to have a chip that can better compete with Intel, but they have what they have right now and want to make money. So there is a point to them opting to release a processor that they can sell for a few more bucks and possibly win over a customer or two.
 
I would buy one if it was around $220-$230. Mostly because I don't want to overclock, so this would be like a factory overclock for me with 20% more clock speed than the 945.
 
They have been predicting this for months now. Many reviewers had speculated they would release a 985 at 3.8GHz or higher by this time because of the success that AMD has been having at ramping up the clocks on their 45nm process. Too bad just upping the clocks won't do much to change the playing field as many have said. But they need something between current Denebs and Bulldozer next year. I am surprised we haven't heard any more updates on BD to coincide with the i3 release.

PS is IDC on vacation? AT CPU forums are noticeably different without his educated input
 
I think AMD's strategy is along the lines of ATI/AMD vs Nvidia; they just don't have good comparable chips but none-the-less are still in some segment of the market. The biggest market has been mobile fwih

"Bulldozer" is AMD's future hope. Unfortunately this will not launch until 2011.

Still I have hope this could be a good chip especially with some nice "power management" (Turbo, Cool-n-quiet) technology strapped on.

Even being optimistic, I see that AMD has been left in the dust.

I hope Intel keeps prices high; I don't see any way AMD can compete on performance long term. They're just too slow at designing.
It's been a nice ride.
 
Intel has implemented out of order loads since 1995 in the P6 core, it is a significant boost to IPC, and yet AMD didn't even use it until 12 years later with Barcelona. K7 didn't have it, and 5 years later K8 STILL didn't have it. Then we have the overambitious Barcelona, which went straight to native quad core when AMD clearly doesn't have a small enough process and ended up starving for data with a tiny 2MB L3...Native quad core sounds nice but means nothing if it is slower than a supposedly "inferior" non-native quad core C2Q.
 
I don't get you negative nancy's. This is a solid CPU. Especially for those who don't OC. It can run any game with ease. It can encode any video with exceptional speed.

I'm happy for even more CPUs by AMD. It's better for all of us.
 
I would also like to see more than higher clocks. Maybe up the L2 cache from 4x512 to 4x1mb, and the L3 from 6MB to 8MB. I mean we already know how this thing will perform clock for clock. But give it more cache and it'll up that.

What the heck are you talking about? Everything AMD has made since K5 has been out-of-order, they haven't built an in-order processor in like 15 years.
