We just got confirmation that AMD will be launching their latest GPU codenamed Hawaii. The event will be scheduled during the week of September 23rd, and there will be a live streamed public event on the 25th that will introduce AMD's new flagship GPU to the world. Some details will be saved for a later date, however, AMD is planning to make an event out of this with some interesting details that include aircraft carriers and some more sneak previews of Battlefield 4.

Yes, let's remember that Battlefield 4 is coming out soon and it looks like AMD's new Hawaii GPU is probably going to be the GPU that it will bundle with. The timing is great for AMD since they'll likely officially launch the GPU and start selling them sometime in early October.

Beautiful Hawaii

AMD will be flying press out for this event and there will be a lot of coverage. While most details about Hawaii are mainly rumors, we can't confirm anything beyond what we know about next month's event and AMD's plans to make this an epic event. AMD is clearly gunning to compete with Nvidia's GeForce GTX Titan and we'll see if AMD can deliver us a single GPU solution that can compete with Nvidia's own $1000 GPU. Also, today's announcement that AMD would be dropping the price of the Radeon HD 7900 below $799 clearly indicates that they are trying to move stock before they launch Hawaii. This is also on the heels of their new Frame Pacing tool which improves the quality of gaming for dual GPU cards like the HD 7990

This should quell some rumors that AMD's Hawaii launch in September would launch as a professional card first and a consumer card second. Considering AMD's track record such a rumor appears to be complete and utter bunk. Nevertheless, this card has been in the works for quite some time and AMD's own Raja Koduri will be on hand to help demonstrate the new GPU to members of the press, hopefully showing his own involvement in the new GPU. With the new/old people that AMD has brought on, we really hope that the company can give Nvidia some real competition to help drive GPU prices down, and performance up.

So they only have rumors and cannot confirm anything but because AMD scheduled an event they are "clearly gunning for titan"? Makes no sense to say it like that.

So, Hawaii is the 9970/9950? About time they came out with a new chip, they haven't refreshed their product stack in almost one and a half years, aside from the low end Bonaire.

holy crap it has been over 2.5 years since 7970 launched. lol what happened to video card progress?

I think you meant to say 1.5yrs but the fact remains it has been awhile since we had a new high-end card from AMD.

3 months shy of 2 years.... Dec 22 2011 to Sept 25 2013. Still a long time, and same node. I hope Hawaii is fast.

I want another GTX280 > 4870 moment, with AMD kicking the crap out of Titan in price/performance
Been waiting for this new gen to finally upgrade so it better be good

I dont think price or value is going to be anywhere close compared to previous gen, we are too far gone beyond bargains like that.

Its not hard to kick Titan in the balls in perf/$, even a gtx770 or 780 does it already... not that these are good value either way.

Every GPU imaginable "kicks the crap" out of Titan in price/performance, that is definitely not the segment that sucker is aimed at.

I think AMD saw my thread earlier today here. Ask and I shall receive!

With almost a 2 year gap, expectations will be very high here. Just competing with Titan will not be enough.

Besides that, this is exciting news. The GPU division of AMD is extremely good at running a tight ship. That is only 6-7 weeks away, which means working cards have been in the hands of more than a few people for a while now. No leaks!

If this is true, they will have the spotlight all to themselves, so the perceived success or failure will be magnified even more than usual.

With ARMA 3 and BF4 launching, I need someone to take my money for a new high-end card. Maybe that will be in only 7 weeks 🙂

Sitting on a gtx650 non ti,hoping October is the release date for sure and hopefully they have the 9850 or whatever card is replacing the 7850 coming out at release.

Week or two away from possibly purchasing a gtx760 but damn tempted to wait but if they only plan to release $400 9950 and $500+ 9970 in October, then def gonna be gtx760 for me.....

I'd expect it'll probably be their high end, but it can't hurt to wait, prices may fall on the 760 by then.

Could easily wait till the day BF4 is officially out,the day that game is officially out my shopping cart on newegg is gonna have to have something going into it.😉

Does this mean AMD will be later to 20nm than Nvidia, or will this be a short refresh cycle?

Most likely. Being the first isn't everything. Look at how poorly AMD launched the 7970. Its high prices were shown up when the GTX 680 was released. Maybe AMD will do something similar.

Well if the 7000 series is anything to go by,more then likely a 7850 replacement will not come out for months later after the high end product has been released....here is to hoping gtx770 or gtx760 price drops in October.......what are the chances?

The Volcanic Islands series is a family of GPUs developed by AMD, which will succeed the Sea Islands line. Volcanic Islands (VI) is expected to compete with the Nvidia Maxwell and second-generation Xeon Phi architectures, and is expected to be released in October, beginning of Q4 2013. The new VI GPUs would be manufactured on a 20 nm Gate-Last process through either TSMC or Common Platform Alliance.

-he seems clear they will be on 20nm.
