What do you guys think of this??

LINK

I vote no...i don't like it. But...i'm not one of authority! =/

So, Athlons are now low end. Wish they would have chosen a better name for the high-end stuff tho...

you didn't even read your own link.

The company will still retain its Athlon and Sempron brand names -- Athlon on its mid-range products and Sempron on up the low-end.

Sounds like it just won't the Athlon FX anymore, rather Phenom FX. As I understand the main parts will still be Athlons.

Edit: Ok I read better, I'm wrong.

What's the problem? Intel dropped the 4xx naming scheme to build the Pentium brand and then abandoned the Pentium name for their own high end chips. It didn't hurt them any and it won't hurt AMD. In a business that evolves as quickly as computer hardware you can't get too hung up on a name. Stick with one too long and it looks like you're stagnating.

I didn't say that it was a problem...i just think the name is stupid. I mean...

"Phenom is pronounced as an abbreviated version of the word "phenomenal." L O L

Both the cases of Athlon and Pentium are not "killings", rather relocation.

A completely new name makes the new architecture more obvious to those who don't hang around computer forums.

You can't please all the people all the time.

You could name the thing "sex" and people would come up with a reason not to like it....I mean who doesn't like sex?;)

Intel stuck with the Pentium name for it's cpu's until the P4 gave it a bad reputation. Athlon was a name associated with dominating Intel's P3 and most of the P4 parts, so I don't see any good reason to change it.

Maybe AMD is changing to Phenom cause it sounds closer to Pentium and they wanna try to steal some name recognition.

Phenom reminds me of
1. The Undertaker - 6'10", mysterious persona, excellent record in the pro-wrestling industry
2. LL Cool J singing 'Something like a phenomenon' and a chick moaning, "Go ahead daddy"
3. A Monster Truck on Steroids

Good name but sounds kinda juvenile. They might as well name it 'SPARTA' :D

Forget all the official names...the CPU code names sound better and AMD code names suck.

The best name of all is CONROE.

My high-end part would be the dual-orbed 'e-Penis'

anyway, given AMD's K naming scheme I wish to have seen a dog reference for K9...

I personally don't like the sound of Phenom moniker but this is just preference. As long as Agena core is good, I'd buy them no matter what the name is.
