AMD to do DDR2?

Its supposed to come with DDR2 support, that's more up to the core rather than the socket.

AMD could still release a Skt939 DDR2 compatible A64 chip.
 
This is old news though...1Q 06 is what AMDs roadmap has been showing for a few months now....The speculation is is whether DDR2 memory controller woulf facilitate a need for a new pin socket. AMD saying new socket M2 in its roadmap....

There is really no reason to do that though. It would just increase confusion in the marketplace and probably hurt them if anything.
 
So lets just get new socket, right?!

Crap... just when I was planing on upgrading until October, I now will have to wait until... DDR2, X2, SATA II, 2x PCIe graphs, thingies.
 
Cmon....You know AMD doesn't need to go to DDR2 667...the only reason it is occuring is they need to keep their current chips running with mainstream memory....AMD will have little effect by the added bandwidth and likely may be hampered by the higher lantencies...They should wait for DDR3 but it is likely they are being forced to go this right by the industry pushing for DDR2 to be sole production....


I wouldn't wait....This may not be out until Jan-March of 06 then you will just talk yourself out of that cause something else is around the corner...endless battle man!!!
 
Well, actually I've always tend being "one step behind". Skt 939 came out, I got a skt 754; when socket whatever comes out, I will surely get mi'self a nice Skt939.

Still, DDR2 is a logical step, and AMD said that they will have to, eventually, change to DDR2 due the i/o apps that servers use that would, in fact, get bennefit from DDR2 bandwith. Or so it says in the interview.

What I do have to look for is defenetly a new monitor... my SONY has just shown me a little, annoying dead pixel.

Hehe, it doesn't matter if they change the socket or not, the old boards won't be compatible with the new chips. Keeping the socket wouldn't let anyone keep either their old boards or old CPUs.

Show me some ram that does 2-2-2 1T @ 300Mhz (600MhzDDR2) and I'm interested...even then you're talking minimal gain over DDR.

Current Micron can do 3-2-2 at 667. Infact that same stuff over-volted can do well past DDR800 with 4-3-3. Samsung afaik is going to be ramping DDR2 900 soon. Elpedia recentally released DDR2 800. Adata now has DDR2 1066.

AMD most certianly could use the bandwith. Might as well seeing how they are both unlocked and have fewer issues scaling with high bus speeds.

The current record for A64 bus speed I think is around 530. I think it is likely to see DDR2 1066 1:1 on socket M2 or 1207 next year if AMD keeps these chips unlocked.
 
The only good news about that is I shouldn't fear buying DDR2 RAM for my wife's Dell PC because I can yank it back from her when I build an A64 DDR2 box sometime in the future.

No, I'm not that mean, she'll get to keep the original 512MB. 😉 She won't need the extra 1 or 2GB I intend to put in.
